Essential functions (job duties):
Utilize computing facilities, including desktop/laptop computers and high-performance computing clusters with Linux operating system, to perform data processing, analysis, control, and management for various types of data generated from research projects conducted in the Department of Oncology of Oncology. Implement advanced computational workflows and pipelines for these data projects using efficient computer programming languages such as R and/or Python, incorporating computer engineering principles and state-of-the-art computational algorithms and software packages.
Develop novel computational methodologies, algorithms, pipelines, programs, and software packages to enhance data processing, statistical and bioinformatics analysis, control, and management of biomedical data under the mentorship of faculty members. Publish these developments and scholarly products in peer-reviewed academic journals and conference abstracts or proceedings.
Collaborate with the Information Technology (IT) divisions in the Department of Oncology and Wayne State University to provide support for computing facilities and infrastructure for research projects, which includes the support for software, hardware, data storage and management, and computational pipelines. Stay up-to-date with computational methodologies, algorithms, models, software, hardware, and pipelines for biomedical data analysis and management, ensuring best practices are followed for scalable, reproducible, and high-performance computing environments.
Communicate effectively with principal investigators and faculty members on the progress of assigned computational and data analysis projects. Prepare, present, and discuss results through reports and presentations to a wide range of collaborators, including faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students in the Department of Oncology.
Ensure compliance of all computational workflows and analytical pipelines with institutional and federal guidelines on data privacy, security, and sharing, particularly when handling sensitive biomedical and clinical datasets. Implement best practices for data governance, including version control, metadata management, and ethical data usage within computing facilities.
Assist in the preparation of the computing facilities and infrastructure, and data management and analysis components for clinical protocols, grant proposals, manuscripts, and abstracts. This includes supporting principal investigators with data-driven sections of clinical protocols, grant proposals and publications, ensuring that computing facilities and infrastructure, data collection, control, management, and analysis adhere to the standards in biomedical research.
Assist in developing and conducting educational activities related to biomedical data analysis for fellows, residents, and graduate students in cancer research. Focus on computational methods for data analytics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, and data management within the biomedical domain.
Unique duties:
Perform statistical and/or bioinformatics analysis and prepare reports based on plans devised by faculty members. - Assist in preparing manuscripts and abstracts, as well as proofreading accepted manuscripts prior to publication. - Stay up-to-date with statistical/bioinformatics and programming methodologies relevant to cancer research. - Implement assignments with excellence and work collaboratively with staff and faculty. - Compile information from clinical studies and report to ClinicalTrials.gov. - If required, participate in biostatistics/ bioinformatics educational activities related to cancer research for investigators, fellows, residents, and graduate students.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
Education Bachelor's degree
Bachelor's degree in a related field of study, preferred. Requires advanced knowledge, predominantly intellectual in character, in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
Experience Experienced (minimum 2 years of job-related experience)
Experience performing basic research techniques, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to work independently. Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills.
Preferred qualifications:
Master’s or Doctoral degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science or a closely related discipline in science or engineering. At least 2 years of work experience with a computer programming language such as R, Python or other languages, demonstrating excellent proficiency. Work experience with data analysis and management using major computer systems in collaborative research. Any work experience gained during the completion of a Master’s or Doctoral degree will be considered as part of this requirement. Ability to work independently. Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.
