**Position Overview:**
The Technology Innovation Directorate (TID), a directorate of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks two Postdoctoral Scholars (Research Associate) to work on advanced charged particle and high density plasma simulations, and plasma diagnostics. The postdoctoral researcher will perform research work under the guidance of Prof. Emilio Nanni or Dr. Cho-Kuen Ng. This R&D is in collaboration with the Scorpius project and the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Work will be performed at SLAC and collaborative on-site visits and experiments at NNSS are anticipated.
**Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.**
**Your specific job responsibilities include:**
Project 1: Bam Transport Simulations
The candidate will work on simulation of beam transport in media using particle-in-cell (PIC) codes for self-consistent electromagnetic beam-material interactions. The scope of work includes beam-plasma simulation using high-performance computing (HPC) plasma codes such as WarpX, studying desorption models, and implementing the relevant physics in the codes. Simulation workflow will be developed to integrate modeling results with hydrodynamic simulation codes in the HPC environment. In addition to having knowledge in beam physics, the candidate's experiences in C++ programing, MPI parallel implementation and GPU offload would be useful for the work.
Project 2: Plasma Diagnostics
The candidate will work on developing a plasma diagnostic that will be utilized for understanding the temporal and spatial properties/composition of a rapidly expanding plasma/plume. The scope of work includes the development of a test setup which is deployable and characterizing the performance of this test setup on rf induced breakdown events. The plasma diagnostic will be designed for compatibility as a beamline diagnostic. Candidates with knowledge and experience in accelerator physics, plasma physics and laboratory experience with high power rf, x-ray sources or plasma experiments are desired.
**Note:** The Research Associate role is a fixed term staff position. This is a 2 years fixed-term appointment with the possibility of extension. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.
Applicants must provide evidence of either a recently completed PhD degree or confirmation of completion of the PhD degree requirements prior to starting the position. **To be successful in this position you will bring:**
+ Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, engineering or related fields, and coursework or/and research experience in the following areas:
+ RF accelerator technology and electron beam dynamics
o Previous experience with electromagnetic simulation software such as CST, Ansys HFSS or COMSOL
+ Strong experimental, analytical and computation skills
+ C++ programing and parallel computing for position in bean transport simulations
+ Effective written and verbal communication skills
+ Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population
+ Ability to work both independently and within a team environment

_The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
