Research Computing Manager

Stanford Research Computing is looking for a manager to join our team of collaborative and innovative professionals assisting Stanford’s faculty and students to use high-performance computing and data tools to explore new frontiers in knowledge and solve some of humanity’s most urgent problems. 

Our staff work directly with some of the world's top researchers in a broad range of disciplines, across all of Stanford’s seven schools — while also supporting and learning from each other in cross-project endeavors. We maintain and steadily improve an advanced research computing facility, and we support a variety of environments for Stanford research. This position is a part of the management team within Stanford’s Research Computing organization, leading a group of staff who work directly with Stanford researchers. This includes development and delivery of training and workshops, onboarding activities for new researchers,  and assistance on a broad variety of topics via direct consultation, office hours and tickets.  Topics can range from the basics of cluster and cloud computing to data movement and storage to assistance with specialized software. 

CORE DUTIES:

Lead and manage team(s) of research computing professionals, including recruiting, hiring, training, developing, evaluating, and setting priorities Ensure work completion within schedule, budgetary and design constraints and provide alternative methods for achieving goals when necessary Oversee the implementation, and maintenance of HPC systems Participate as a member of the Research Computing leads team; contribute to strategic and operational planning for the organization Ensure the reliability and performance of computing systems Collaborate with research teams and leadership to understand computational needs and develop tailored solutions Lead the researcher-facing team in developing and delivering training sessions and workshops for researchers on effective use of computing resources and tools Engage with organizations, researchers, vendors, and working groups internal and external to the University in support of strategic goals and objectives Implement and enforce policies and procedures to ensure the security and compliance of research computing resources, including data protection and access controls Stay up to date with industry best practices and emerging technologies to ensure the security and integrity of systems Communicate and implement policies, procedures, best practices, recommendations and guidelines in compliance with established University administrative policies and procedures

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Experience leading or overseeing the work of technical and/or researcher-facing professionals Ability to problem solve Ability to quickly learn, synthesize and articulate complex subject matter Ability to work and communicate effectively with others Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem solving skills in a variety of situations Strong relationship and consensus building skills Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment Ability to resolve issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture

The expected pay range for this position is $135,374 - $166,823 per annum.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work, use a telephone and use light/ fine grasping. Occasionally write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. Rarely stand, walk, sort, and file paperwork or parts.
