Responsibilities

Under the supervision of Research faculty, the Research Engineer II (RE2) facilitates designing, developing, implementing, and performing research experiments. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, method development, design of automatic data collection programs, design and drafting of fixtures and test apparatuses (using rapid prototyping, manual machining or other methods). The RE2 also provides technical biomedical engineering support in the design, repair, modification of specialized
equipment and their applications.

Lab Operations

Maintains supply inventory, organization and other records, and remains within known fiscal limits when budgeting and forecasting for supplies, preventing delays due to inadequate supplies.Maintains quality control of all equipment utilized in his/her research area by initiating routine service checks, preventive maintenance, and calibrating in accordance with equipment manuals, ensuring all equipment is performing to standard and training new personnel on equipment use.Creates, maintains, and updates lab's internal procedure manuals.Familiarity with vendors to ensure up-to-date knowledge of outsourcing options; finds outsourcing options for engineered equipment to minimize cost and man-hours.Researches vendors and manufacturers such as the acquisitions of appropriate parts and equipment and the maintenance of the laboratory's needs.

Research Procedures

Keeps accurate records of research results and efforts and presents findings in regular lab meetings.Contributes new ideas for increasing scope and impact of ongoing projects.Assists in writing and proofreading test reports, manuscripts and grant applications.Participates in continuing education such as searching and reading literature, attending presentations, and attending national conferences.

Engineering Procedures

Given desired work product, designs and implements sound engineering processes that can be easily interpreted/produced by third party; keeps accurate log of work and presents plans in regular lab meetings.Recommends or produces analysis programs that are meaningfully and thoroughly commented and/or well documented with accompanying flowcharts or write-ups.Utilizes appropriate engineering analysis to optimize design, evaluate properties of equipment designed, evaluate validity and reliability of results derived from designed equipment, and/or filter and summarize experimental results; consults with texts or seeks advice when uncertain of appropriate analysis.Manages data by setting up and running efficient and automated data filtering and reduction processes to produce concise summaries of findings.Serves as a technical research and information resource in areas of application, equipment selection, performance testing and safety training issues

Qualifications

MINIMUM

Bachelor's degree in electrical, biomedical, or mechanical engineering or related field required.

Two (2) years experience in electrical, biomedical, or mechanical engineering, advanced mathematics or physics statistics, computer simulation systems, control systems, or related field required

PREFERRED

Master's degree in related field preferred.

Maintain and design equipment used in biomedical engineering or related field, technical documentation or writing capabilities.
