Job DescriptionGeneral Notes
The Institute for Fusion Studies (IFS) is a national center for research in plasma physics and fusion energy science. Its primary mission is to contribute to the understanding of phenomena important to fusion and other plasma physics-related areas, by performing basic research of originality and rigor. Emphasis is placed on tackling scientific issues of long-range significance and exchanging knowledge with other academic fields. The IFS is comprised of an experimental and a theory group. The former conducts experiments to advance understanding of plasma transport and turbulence and operates and develops plasma diagnostic systems.
Over its 50-year history, the UT Center for Electromechanics (CEM) has distinguished itself as a leader in power generation and energy storage technologies and the development of advanced electrical and mechanical prototypes. CEM has demonstrated a track record for transitioning fundamental to applied research and synthesizing advanced academic research into real world products that make a difference. Examples include the prototype generators for electric launch of aircraft on the newest US aircraft carriers, to the recently upgraded tracker for the Hobby-Eberly telescope, to CEM’s role in alternative fuel vehicle research and the H2@Scale program.
