Purpose

To conduct transportation-related research within the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) on emerging mobility technologies for use by government agencies, including the Federal Highway Administration, local and regional Texas transportation agencies and the Texas Department of Transportation.

Responsibilities

Perform advanced mathematical and statistical analyses of data to identify insights, develop heat maps, and support decision making by research sponsors.

Develop new methods for presenting information to decision makers including 3-D and 4-D visualization of highway infrastructure components and corridors using proprietary software and other methods as determined during studies.

Develop new and innovative analysis methods to solve transportation safety, funding decision support and policy support questions posed by sponsors.

Work independently or with other research team members to develop project deliverables within time and funding constraints set by the contract.

Write or assist in writing research proposals to obtain funded projects.

Write or assist in writing sponsored research reports, interagency contract reports and research papers for publication in professional journals.

Make professional presentations at state, national and international conferences of authored and co-authored professional papers, research project reports and invited talks.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in transportation engineering, public policy with four years of experience. Prior experience working with the Texas Department of Transportation and/or other transportation agencies

Technology evaluation and strategic planning, preference for connected and autonomous vehicles. Policy analysis skills. Knowledge in, and experience with, public affairs

Experience working with teams of engineers, planners, and community organizations. Experience writing professional research papers and grant applications. Comfort in presenting transportation research information to a large audience. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Basic skills in using Microstation and Bentley Suites Open Roads.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, with transportation emphasis, or similar such as Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or structural design with two years of experience. Strong knowledge of Texas transportation and regional roadway system design and operations, Experience with topics complementary to transportation that are influenced by mobility decisions (freight, highway safety, economics, data modeling and analysis). Understanding of professional and technical writing techniques.

Salary Range

$70,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

Travel to TxDOT and other State Agency offices at cities across Texas to conduct research including data collection, interviewing practicing engineers and other professionals, attending conferences and meetings and other stakeholder engagement activities. Partnership development with public and private sector entities, attendance and participation in national conferences to deliver presentations, and regular internal team meetings.
