Research Investigator, Animal Models
The primary purpose of the Research Investigator position is to apply technical expertise and experience to coordinate, design and carry out research projects as part of the target validation team in the McCombs Institute for Early Detection and Treatment of Cancer.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Laboratory Operations

1. Coordinates and conducts routine lab experiments, such as animal models, cell culture, drug treatment, spectrophotometer, and electrophoresis.

2. Proficient in most current laboratory procedures including the following: animal models, cell/tissue culture methods, molecular cloning, vector construction, transfection, immunochemistry, protein purification, western blotting, gene mapping, promoter analysis, transcription assays, RNA and DNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, mouse experiments and drug treatment, among others.

3. Develops and adapts research techniques to obtain desired results.

4. Assembles, operates, and supervises the use of laboratory equipment.

5. Manage lab supplies for target validation work.

6. Plans training and research work activity for assigned laboratory and research personnel.

Data Analysis and Reports

1. Provides thorough reports of experiments performed, both in writing in a laboratory notebook and verbally at weekly group meetings. These reports will include interpretation of the results, rationale for improvements in established experimental methods and plans for improvements in experimental design.

2. Exhibits considerable imagination, inventiveness and initiative in planning and executing experiments and in evaluating the results.

3. Assists/collaborates with the supervisor and other research staff in preparation of scientific reports.

4. Independently designs and executes target validation experiments. Analyze and present results in the group and with the industrial partner.

Teaming

1. Works directly with other team members to achieve research goals and aims.

2. Plays a collaborative role, interacts with, and provides input to investigators in the McCombs Institute in a timely and interactive fashion.

3. Communicates effectively with supervisor, collaborators, and co-workers on scientific and other challenging issues pertaining to the work.

Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Preferred: Master's level degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

EXPERIENCE: Five years experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, three years of required experience.

Preferred:Experience with animal models.
