Job Description
 

Gilead's mission is to discover, develop, and deliver therapies that will improve the lives of patients with life-threatening illnesses worldwide. We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Lab Ops - Specialist III to join our Flow Cytometry Core team within the Gilead Sciences Research Department. The successful candidate will contribute to the day-to-day operations of the flow cytometry core labs and maintaining a high-functioning laboratory capable of meeting the needs of Gilead’s Oncology, Inflammation, and Virology therapeutic areas. Responsibilities include, but not limited to, maintaining and troubleshooting equipment, startup, shutdown, daily cleaning and QC of equipment, as well as training and advising on the use of instrumentation and performing cell sorts. You will also troubleshoot flow-based assays to enhance our understanding of disease pathobiology, help with lab inventory management and automation. Direct experience in flow cytometry and cell sorting is required, with previous experience in a core setting highly desired.

Main responsibilities:

Perform instrument calibration, maintenance, cleaning, and ensure optimal performance

Troubleshoot and diagnose complex flow instrumentation, making repairs or coordinate with field engineers

Perform multiparameter cell sorting, including setting up and/or operating the sorter for users, optimize cell sorting conditions for given assays (experience with BSL2+ sort is a plus)

Share best practices in flow cytometry and provide guidance on panel design, sample preparation, and assay optimization

Execute experiments to validate standard operating procedures (SOPs) for flow cytometry assays; create and revise SOPs as necessary

Assist and train flow core users in the flow technologies, experiment design, and analysis

Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, in a highly collaborative setting

Basic Qualifications

Minimum Required Education and Years of Experience

High School and Six Years’ Experience

OR

Associate Degree and Five Years’ Experience

OR

Bachelor's Degree and Four Years’ Experience

OR

Masters' Degree and Two Years’ Experience

4+ years in flow cytometry

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

Previous experience in industry or a flow cytometry core setting is highly desired

Basic cell biology and immunology knowledge and technical expertise in performing cell-based assays

BSL2 and aseptic practices

Extensive experience with flow cytometry, especially cell sorting; proficiency with BD, Beckman Coulter, ThermoFisher, and Sony instrumentation.

Ability to troubleshoot assays and instrumentation using critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

Excellent verbal, technical, and interpersonal communication skills

Highly collaborative, fast learner, resourceful problem solver, and able to prioritize and be flexible in a fast-paced environment

Proficient in Windows-based systems and quick to learn new software and hardware.

The salary range for this position is: $102,085.00 - $132,110.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
