*** REMOTE BUT MIGHT NEED TO COME ONSITE TO MEET WITH RESEARCHERS*** The Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides a broad range of IT services for all NC State University students, faculty, and staff. Shared Services provides research computing services for the research community in collaboration with the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI), the Office of the Provost and colleges. Shared Services is looking for a Research Linux Engineer who will be responsible for supporting the needs of researchers. Research needs can range from Linux environment support, server configuration to full blown environment design and deployment. The overarching goal is to build enterprise-level environments that are NIST compliant so that researchers can deploy their applications into their environment. Due to the nature of researchers and a "build-as-we-go" mentality, this position will require candidates to have excellent stakeholder communication and flexibility across technologies to assess the ideal solution and build a solution that makes sense for the researchers needs. Technical skills will need to span Linux Engineering and Administration, Scripting, Infrastructure as Code, and Security best practices. Core NCSU technologies include RHEL 9, Xen Server, HPC, Terraform/Ansible, Bash or Python. Most of the work will be on-premise with a potential need for hybrid cloud/on-prem approach down the road. Collaborate with researchers and stakeholders to understand requirements and design a secure, NIST-compliant environment. Manage and maintain Linux-based systems, ensuring optimal performance and security. Develop and implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools like Terraform, Ansible, and/Or CloudFormation. Automate system configurations, deployments, and monitoring using CI/CD pipelines and configuration management tools. Implement and maintain NIST security controls, including access control, audit and accountability, and system protection. Conduct risk assessments and implement measures to mitigate identified risks. Maintain thorough documentation of system configurations, security measures, and compliance efforts. Monitor and assess the security posture of the environment to ensure ongoing compliance

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $65.00/hr.
