Research Nurse, BCC Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic direction of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Director, or designate, the Research Nurse receives direction from Principal Investigators or designates, and is is responsible for reviewing research protocol and study design with Study Investigator(s), screening, registration, assessment and ongoing follow-up of research subjects in accordance with study protocols. Supports department/program personnel to ensure study requirements are met. The Research Nurse has principal responsibility for the coordination of the study interventions, nursing care, monitoring, clinical assessment, and education of patients participating in the assigned clinical trials. The Research Nurse has formal responsibility for advising or teaching nursing staff in clinic and treatment areas on specialized theory and practice related to study activities. The Research Nurse is responsible for translating new knowledge into nursing practices and standards of care to improve and advance care across BC Cancer. The Research Nurse functions as a member of the collaborative, interdisciplinary Nursing and Allied Health research and Knowledge Translation Team responsible for planning and implementing research studies. The Research Nurse participates in the coordination of study activities from the protocol review and approval stage through to activation, study closure and follow-up.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Supports nurses in the provision of direct care to patients in accordance with established standards for nursing practice through methods such as monitoring the standards of care and acting as a resource to nurses by assessing, demonstrating, and directing appropriate nursing care in relation to the applicable study.
2. Provides nursing care which meets the individual needs of study patients by performing duties such as:
a. Preforms nursing procedures required by the applicable study such as physical assessment and administering medications and treatments.
b. Provides teaching and counseling for patients and their families regarding protocols, symptom management, disease preventative measures and general health management.
c. Supporting department/program staff regarding studies and acts as a resource to nurses when patients are enrolled in a study.
3. Advises/teaches nursing staff in clinic and treatment areas on a variety of issues including specialized theory and practice related to study activities.
4. Promotes research through translating new knowledge into nursing practices and standards of care to improve and advance care across BC Cancer.
5. Participates in the evaluation, planning, and implementation of study protocols by performing duties such as:
a. Reviewing protocols and providing input on resource impact and patient care issues.
b. Reviewing and commenting on consent forms prepared by study team members and providing orientation to nurses regarding preparing consent forms and related protocols.
c. Providing input in the development of research study budgets.
6. Works collaboratively with the Director, Principal Investigator(s) and other members of the study team to complete and submit appropriate documents, including obtaining institutional approvals, to obtain ethics approval by the BC Cancer Research Ethics Board (REB) and the Office of Research Administration (ORA).
7. Identifies patient eligibility for participation in research studies by performing duties such as:
a. Identifying potential eligible patients from referral documentation.
b. Reviewing and evaluating completed data and clinical findings against study inclusion criteria.
c. Reviewing and recommending on eligibility status with the principle investigator
8. Completes data collection as specified in the protocol and provides leadership for the study team by performing duties such as:
a. Obtaining information from the patient, chart, family or other health care professional.
b. Assisting with the development and administration of data collection tools (i.e. study questionnaires, surveys) for use in specific research studies.
c. Completing study case report and follow-up forms and maintaining own notes and current data on patients and study activities completed.
d. Provides orientation regarding study and protocols to nurses around completing data collection and management.
9. Ensures that appropriate appointments, study activities and follow up visits have been scheduled. Provides pre and post- study support to subjects as applicable which may include referral to other resources.
10. Maintains required records and other related study documentation including updating and completing case report forms. Ensures study documents and procedures are up to regulatory standards.
11. Provides orientation regarding study and protocols to other staff as required. Liaises with other members of the study team regarding clinical issues, records and data management, protocol changes, etc.
12. Adheres to Department/Program policies and procedures.
13. Attends study team meetings and education sessions. Travels to national and international events and meetings related to research studies as requested and approved by the Director, Primary Investigator or designate.
14. Practices research with knowledge of and adherence to Tri-Council Policy Statement requirements and regulations.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Two (2) years of recent related clinical nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
• Certification in oncology nursing
Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated relevant clinical research knowledge.
• Demonstrated ability in leading and participating in quantitative and qualitative research projects.
• Knowledge of research process and methodology.
• Demonstrated ability to deal with others effectively.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to organize work and set priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently.
• Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the job
• Demonstrated skills in CPR techniques.
