A Research Program Coordinator position is available to work with Dr. Kelly Dorgan at The University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, TX, starting in winter/spring 2025 (negotiable). Research in the lab integrates ecology, biomechanics (including engineering theory and methods), and invertebrate behavior, morphology and physiology with engineering theory and methods, including development of new instrumentation.

This interdisciplinary ONR-funded project focuses on deep sea sediment stability and the role of infauna in modifying sediment properties. In addition to conducting research, the technician will be expected to help manage the project, including organizing field work and workshops and managing data. The position is for 2.5 years, including cruises in Fall 2025 and Spring and Fall 2026, with a possibility of extension depending on performance and funding.

Our interdisciplinary approach to science benefits from a lab group with varied perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. Candidates with strong backgrounds in biology or marine science who also have expertise in other sciences (math, physics/engineering, geology, etc.), creative writing or arts, or technical skills (workshop, electronics, etc.) are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

· Review of relevant literature

· Experimental design, trouble-shooting, and data analysis

· Organize and participate in field work

· Preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

· Present research results at professional conferences

· Mentoring students and collaborating

· Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

· MS in a relevant field (marine science, biology, geosciences, or other)

· At least 2 years experience in a role supervising others or managing projects

· Peer-reviewed publications in a relevant field and strong writing skills

· Programming experience

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience with managing projects and large collaborations

· Experience with invertebrate sample processing and identification

· Background in sediment ecology, biomechanics or bio-inspired design

· Experience with field work, especially deep sea research

Salary Range

$59,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

· May work in all weather conditions

· May participate in extended research cruises (2-4 weeks)

· May work around standard office conditions

· May work around electrical and mechanical hazards
