Research Program Director

The University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Research Program Director for a newly established Institute in national security and intelligence to oversee project deliverables on a multi-year national security project. This role reports to and works with the Institute Executive Director and requires coordination with the contract Sponsor. Key responsibilities will include project management, research program development, and sponsor engagement.  

Responsibilities include: 

Manage work effort for multiple large-scale research tasks between senior leadership and research teams from the School of Data Science and the Biocomplexity Institute Create, implement, and oversee project management program to align workflows to meet an intensive schedule of interdependent deliverables Provide weekly or monthly project updates for the project sponsor, senior leadership, and management Coordinate engagement with the Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy, the School of Data Science, the Biocomplexity Institute, the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of the Provost, and UVA Research Computing Coordinate regularly with the Institute Director of Finance on project budgets and burn rates Manage the design and delivery of unclassified and classified research technology investments in coordination with UVA Research Computing Supervisory responsibilities for up to 8 technology and project managers  Direct and facilitate planning efforts of research teams to conduct academic meetings and symposia Coordinate stakeholders and outside consultant engagement  Manage project change requests with the Sponsor Review and recommend approval of budgets and schedules for project deliverables, particularly those applying to subcontracts, industry experts, and Subject Matter Experts Gather monthly feedback from the Sponsor on project results; analyze feedback and incorporate into future project proposals for option years Direct the implementation of the Institute’s continuous program improvement plan from launch to optimal operations Serve as a change champion between diverse working teams to develop healthy collaboration environments and continuous culture improvement In addition to the above responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

 

Required Qualifications: 

Master's degree and seven years' experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 10 years' experience.

 

Highly Preferred Qualifications: 

Education & Experience: Master's degree and 10-15 years' experience; Experience deploying secure communications and IT platforms under the National Industrial Security ProgramCertification: PMP or similar certificationUS CitizenshipCurrent ISA/TS Clearance

The Institute offers a flexible working environment though regular in-person presence will be required throughout the year. This is a hybrid position that will require the ability to attend regular in person meetings in Charlottesville, VA and the ability to travel to NOVA, Culpepper or sites within VA 

 

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.  

 

Position Details:

The anticipated start date is September 15, 2024, and this position will remain open until filled.   

 

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.  The initial period of performance on the anchor research project is through August 2026, with options for three one-year renewals.  This is an exempt level, benefited position. The anticipated hiring range for this role is $145,000 - $170,000 commensurate with education and experience. 

 

This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
