Research Scientist

The University of Virginia’s Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education at the UVA School of Education and Human Development invites applications for a Research Scientist position. The appointment is for one year to serve on two National Science Foundation-funded projects. The research scientist will have the chance to cultivate their own research program in science, mathematics, engineering, technology, and computer science (STEM+CS) education.

The research scientist will work on two projects, one focused on how teachers customize STEM+CS curricula to their own school contexts and another project focused on helping middle school teachers implement STEM+CS curricular units with an AI-based teacher dashboard. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to participate in activities within the UVA community and beyond (e.g., national conferences, other dissemination avenues) to benefit their professional growth.

Primary responsibilities include managing the implementation, data analysis, and dissemination for both projects, including implementing professional development with teachers. Project activities will involve design-based research, classroom studies of teachers implementing STEM+CS curricular units, and analysis and dissemination of project findings.

Minimum Requirements
Education: Requires a doctoral degree or master's degree with significant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A Ph.D. in STEM+CS education or a related field

Experience:

Conducting professional development with elementary and middle school teachers, implementing STEM+CS curricular units in classrooms.

A record of disseminating findings in appropriate outlets.

Demonstrate a commitment to fostering inclusion in pedagogy and research.

Prior experience working on NSF-funded projects


Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
