Research Scientist

The Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia (UVA) within the School of Medicine (SOM) seeks applications for a Research Scientist. We are seeking applicants whose research focuses on lipedema clinical trials and working directly with the Principal Investigator in an independent study of quality of life in lipedema in the United States. The research scientist will be involved in research studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and biorepository science.

Ongoing research will include studies which continually collect MRI and related in vivo data and coordinated biological samples in well-characterized patients with lymphatic disease. Research funding is provided by the NIH, and non-profit foundations. The Research Scientist will specifically recruit and screen participants from UVA clinics and nationally with and without lipedema, schedule research visits in coordination with the study team and Core facilities, manage databases, and perform the regulatory and ethics requirements of such studies. They will design data collection sheets, export results for statistical analysis, analyze demographic data for progress reporting, and assist with publication of results meriting co-authorship. Research work will be conducted with independent judgement, while reporting outcomes to the PI regularly. Conducting data analysis and assisting other lab members in their analyses of imaging, biorepository, or qualitative research data is expected.

In addition, the Research Scientist will assist the PI in identifying and preparing new grant proposals to expand research avenues. These new avenues may include MRI technology development, new clinical applications, or new research tools like qualitative surveys or devices. They will seek new research initiatives for the lab, and conduct their own independent research towards publication. They will contribute to new grant applications that expand research potential for the lab.

As such, the Research Scientist will be a skilled communicator who can carry out complex initiatives to assist the PI, coordinate between team members, funding agencies and collaborating labs. They will be an experienced scientist able to produce data for grant applications and progress reports, and publish scientifically rigorous articles to impact the growth of the research field of lymphatic diseases.
