**9568BR** **Position Title:** Research Scientist **Organization:** CAD Image Permanence Institute **Job Responsibilities:** + Independent Research: + Perform individual components of a research program as guided by senior researchers and faculty, contributing to novel methods, techniques, and technologies in the preservation science field. + Research Planning & Design: + Support faculty or senior researchers in various aspects of research, including project planning, research design, development of innovative methods, techniques, processes, technologies and products, model development, overall data management, documentation and maintenance of tools, software, and procedural methods, as well as advanced qualitative or quantitative analysis leading to significant and original research interpretation. + Research Communication: + Present research findings through authored papers, manuscripts, technical white papers, publications, and at conferences or workshops. + Collaboration: + Work with internal and external stakeholders, fostering effective communication and cooperation to drive research outcomes. + Project Leadership: + Plan and lead smaller research components within larger projects, managing resources and timelines. + Funding Support: + Assist in identifying and securing research funding to support ongoing and future research initiatives. + Teaching and Professional Development: + Deliver research-led teaching in professional development programs, contributing to the education of individuals within the field. + May assist in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate classes. + Testing Services Support: + Contribute to IPI’s testing services by coordinating and executing materials testing services projects, providing technical support, and offering client consultations as needed. **FLSA Category:** Exempt **Requisition Number:** 9568BR **College/Division:** College of Art and Design **Required Application Documents:** Cover Letter, Curriculum Vitae or Resume, List of References **Employment Category:** Fulltime **Additional Details:** In compliance with NYS's Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is listed above. Click the link to search openings and in the keyword search field, enter the title of the position or the BR number. **Wage Band (https://www.rit.edu/fa/humanresources/content/staff-wage-grade-bands) :** 119A **Required Qualifications:** + Master’s degree in specified field of preservation science, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry or chemical engineering, or related field with three years of directly related experience; **OR** Bachelor’s degree in specified field of preservation science, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry or chemical engineering, or related field plus at least 6 years of post-bachelor’s work experience. + Demonstrate expertise in the chemical degradation and stability of organic materials, with knowledge of research methods, analytical procedures, and scientific writing, including peer-reviewed publications. + Ability to independently plan, execute, and lead research projects, with evidence of leadership in project management, including grant and project writing procedures. + Experience in computer programming with high-level languages such as MATLAB or Python, and exhibits a critical eye for consistency, reproducibility, and the scientific method. + Excellent teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas for cross-disciplinary audiences and effectively communicate findings to sponsors, stakeholders, and research teams. + Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills, with the ability to lead the work of others and advocate for safety and ethics in the workplace. + Demonstrate excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously. **Preferred Qualifications:** + PhD in preservation science, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, chemical engineering or related disciplines is strongly preferred. + Applied knowledge of Design of Experiments. + Previous experience in cultural heritage preservation. **Department/College Description:** **Image Permanence Institute (IPI)** IPI is a university-based research center in the College of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology dedicated to supporting the preservation of cultural heritage collections in libraries, archives, and museums around the world. IPI achieves this mission by maintaining an active preservation research program that informs and advances professional-level education and training activities, publications, consulting services, and the development of practical preservation resources and tools. IPI resides in a 7,000 square foot space in the Gannett building of the College of Art and Design and staff members include preservation research scientists, environmental management specialists, a materials testing researcher, web application and publication designers, and business operations personnel. The staff provides a wide range of expertise including research and dissemination skills applied collaboratively in conducting research initiatives, creating professional workshops and webinars, developing web applications and publications, and providing consulting services. All of these activities focus on assisting cultural institutions with improving their preservation programs and in most instances could not be duplicated by any other existing organization.
