Research Scientist
The Urban Systems Lab is seeking a Research Scientist / Assistant Research Professor to lead research on nature-based solutions (NbS), environmental justice, and green infrastructure strategies for urban resilience. The candidate will support several active research initiatives including the development of a digital serious game to enhance understanding of NbS and urban resilience as part of the EU Horizon-funded effort, GoGreen Next. The role will also advance the Lab’s work in NbS, and the natural sciences to improve approaches to climate adaptation and community-based planning, collaborating with municipal partners and community organizations to promote sustainable, data-driven solutions. This position is ideal for researchers passionate about environmental equity, community-based resilience strategies, and the integration of NbS in urban governance. The candidate will lead applied research efforts, translating scientific insights into policy recommendations, decision-support tools, and spatial analyses that support equitable urban development. Responsibilities + Conduct applied research on NbS, climate adaptation, and equitable green infrastructure planning. + Develop policy integration strategies to support sustainable, community-centered climate solutions. + Collaborate with municipal agencies and community organizations to co-produce research and decision-making frameworks. + Create new research on urban NbS with collaborating partners nationally and globally, contributing and leading new funding proposals and research projects + Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, white papers, and policy briefs. In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $75,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. + PhD in Environmental Science, Geography, Urban Planning, or a related field. + Experience in nature-based solutions, urban resilience, and green infrastructure. + Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, including GIS and policy analysis. + Demonstrated ability to engage with policymakers, community leaders, and cross-sector partners.
