UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem-solving skills, and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world. UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty. **The Department of Neurobiology and Biophysics has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 to join their team.** **OVERVIEW:** This position in the Pasupathy Lab contributes to scientific discoveries related to visual perception in the primate brain. This position will also impact the scientific community at the university by helping junior scientists with their research projects. In addition, this position will aid in the ongoing success of scientific projects funded by the NIH and in so doing future grant funding. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** + Updating experimental framework 10%: The primate neurophysiology experiments run in the lab use UNIX machines that interface with commercial hardware using custom software. Over time as new computers are purchased and operating systems are updated, software needs to be updated to ensure proper experimental rig functioning. This position has a responsibility to ensure that the rig machines are appropriately updated and functioning as expected. + Developing the experimental paradigm to investigate specific research questions 5%: To conduct the experiments in lab, appropriate software needs to be written to create appropriate visual stimuli. Questions and appropriate stimuli will be designed in collaboration with the PI of the lab but this position has the responsibility to write software to create appropriate stimuli and ensure that the program behaves appropriately. + Conducting the experiments 10%: Experiments in awake non-human primates are conducted by inserting fine electrodes into the brain while viewing with loupes, then collecting neurophysiology data as the animal is engaged in behavioral tasks. Experiments also involve recording chamber maintenance and cleaning. + Data sharing 5%: The projects in the lab are funded by grants from the NIH and data sharing every 6 months is mandated. This requires transforming the data into acceptable data formats and uploading them. + Analyzing the data 35%: Data collected in experiments need to be pre-processed and then analyzed using custom code written in Matlab or Python. This includes implementing standard methods of analysis and implementing new methods based on published literature. Data are visualized using custom software and statistical methods are used to assess significance of results. Based on the observed results, control experiments may need to implemented for data collection and analysis. + Developing computational models based on the results 15%: To interpret the physiological results and determine how the observed responses are built, models need to be based on the available literature and original ideas on what computations may be at play. Models may be schematic models that are descriptive or functional models. This task involves reading the literature, brainstorming to develop original ideas and then implementing these. + Writing manuscripts for publication 20%: The results from experiments, analyses and models have to prepared as a manuscript for publication. This requires clearly describing the methods and results, and discussing the implications of the results in the context of prior studies. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** + Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of Experience conducting neurophysiology experiments from awake monkeys and analyzing data with custom code, or equivalent combination of education/experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS** + Expertise in designing and conducting experiments in awake nonhuman primates + Knowledge of visual system literature + Ability to analyze the data collected **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS** + Collaborative spirit and working together with other members of the lab group. Helping junior team in all aspects of experimental design and data analysis. **Application Process:** The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process. These assessments may include Work Authorization, Cover Letter and/or others. Any assessments that you need to complete will appear on your screen as soon as you select “Apply to this position”. Once you begin an assessment, it must be completed at that time; if you do not complete the assessment, you will be prompted to do so the next time you access your “My Jobs” page.
