The role will aid in the preclinical development of vaccine and other targeted therapeutics created at the Institute for Protein Design. This includes early manufacturability assessment and design of IND-enabling experiments that support the development of new medicines. **POSITION PURPOSE** Over the next 5 years the IPD hopes to advance 5-10 products from its own pipeline through pre-clinical proof of concept to pre-IND or IND stage assets. The goal of this role is to help advance the assets coming from the IPD portfolio through pre-clinical product development. The role will report to the Executive Director and work closely with the Baker, King, and Bhardwaj labs. The ideal candidate would have at least 5 years of biotechnology experience (biotech/pharma) and be familiar with the stages of early product development for biologics and/or vaccines. Product development is a complex interdisciplinary process and in this role, the successful individual would need to be able to interface with many aspects of the IPD including: 1) The IPD member labs and will be expected to build a close and productive relationship with the PIs and postdoctoral/graduate students 2) The Core R&D Labs who serve as functional teams that can contribute to advancing candidates 3) The project management team that helps facilitate grant deliverables and shepard products through development. 4) The candidate will also be involved in designing strategic drug development plans for internal programs, with a specific focus on manufacturability and early CMC and design of release assays and primary pharmacology studies. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Oversee early development of computationally designed protein candidates within the IPD portfolio (50%) + Assesses the manufacturability and development of early-stage drug candidates. + Develops experimental plans and complex timelines for translational program activities. + Suggests critical improvements to existing therapeutic candidates and benchmarking studies to prioritize lead drug programs. + Provides mentoring and training of Core R&D staff and trainees in the areas of preclinical assay design and execution.Manage translational activities through strong collaboration with Core R&D and IPD member labs to ensure successful advancement of assets (40%) + Guides lead selection and optimization in collaboration with PIs, trainees and staff. + Design robust experiments to drive pipeline decisions. + Draws on previous networks (CROs, KOLs and consultants) and drug development experiences to improve the impact that UW-IPD discoveries have on the world. + Presents historical data and case studies from relevant drug development programs to educate staff and trainees about the complexities of therapeutic drug development. + Leads strategic planning of early programs and helps develop new technical or engineering solutions to current development bottlenecks.Support documentation of translational activities for grants or sponsored research projects and regulatory filings (10%) + Critically evaluates and analyzes data for presentation to stakeholders. + Prepares documentation for pre-clinical proof-of-concept up to pre-IND or IND filings. + Assesses and addresses regulatory considerations and compliance requirements. + Helps support the drafting of new intellectual property and research grants as well as proposals to outside stakeholders. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** + Doctoral Degree in Biochemistry, Immunology, or other relevant natural science + 7 years or more of relevant experience in related field. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS** + The ideal candidate will have experience working both in an academic setting and a biotech start up environment. They should have led programs at the Senior Scientist or Director level in industry, and be able to function autonomously with minimal supervision. + Experience with pre-clinical R&D and product development activities able to support regulatory filings. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS** + PhD, MD or equivalent higher-level degrees. + Postdoctoral research or industry experience in a relevant laboratory or drug discovery environment. + Expertise in overseeing or running relevant core laboratories such as bioassays, protein or peptide production and biophysical characterization. **Application Process:** The application process may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process. These assessments may include Work Authorization, Cover Letter and/or others. Any assessments that you need to complete will appear on your screen as soon as you select “Apply to this position”.
