Research Scientist in Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics

The Zhang Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated, organized and enthusiastic research scientist for high-throughput proteomic studies. The Zhang lab focuses on the development and application of mass spectrometry-based methods for identification of key players in cancer biology and drug discovery. We integrate high-throughput proteomic, genetic, chemical, bioinformatics tools to dissect the regulatory mechanisms involved in cancer development and treatment.

Research Scientists are expected to perform assigned tasks independently. In addition to a firm background in the particular field, Research Scientists should demonstrate the ability to lead small groups and work without additional supervision once objectives are defined and methods of approach are set. As Senior Professional Research Staff, they are not expected to provide formal guidance to students or otherwise participate in the instructional program.

Candidates must have a working knowledge of mass spectrometry.  The candidate must also have strong leadership skills in being able to manage personnel in the lab and project management skills to manage multiple projects at once.  Candidates are expected to help lab members write grants and proposals, so good communication skills are required. They are expected to maintain a safe lab culture, write research papers and grants, and help mentor undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory.
