Research Soil Scientist
Agricultural Research Service
Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Northeast Area (NEA), at the Food Systems Research Unit in Burlington, VT. In this position, you will help to improve the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of Northeast food systems while enhancing human nutrition. Responsibilities Assesses the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soil on small and medium-sized farms. Conducts laboratory, field, and on-farm studies of soil responses to management, impacts of soil on food and feed production and quality, and interactions with regionally relevant environmental challenges, such as water quality deterioration. Identifies opportunities to improve the quality of soils in ways that enhance food system resilience to climate change, improve livelihoods dependent on farms and food businesses, and support public health. Establishes partnerships with supply chain stakeholders to keep research aligned with industry goals and challenges and transfer technology to the public and key industries in the Northeast food system. Identifies opportunities to improve soil health such that regional food systems are better able to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Provides data to the broader team, where it will be used in food system models to infer how processes throughout the food system interact with soil health to influence the outcomes of regional food production and consumption. Collaborates with ARS, other federal agencies, and academic research institutions to study how soil factors influence food quality and to explore soil management options to improve the resilience and economic viability of regional food systems.
