Department Description:Institute for Health Research

The Kaiser Permanente Colorado Institute for Health Research (IHR) is an integrated department that conducts, publishes, and disseminates epidemiologic, behavioral, health services, implementation, and clinical research. The organization has a specific focus on conducting research that can be translated into clinical practice, health promotion, and policies to influence the health of individuals and populations.- The goals of this project are to improve control of cardiovascular (CV) disease risk factors by engaging patients experiencing health disparities in a tech- based self-management intervention. The intervention includes text messages and chatbots, in combination with connecting patients with health system providers. We will aim to improve the American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 (LE8) lifestyle factors (blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, physical activity, weight, sleep, diet, and smoking), that when uncontrolled lead to common co- existing chronic conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes), morbidity, health care costs and death. Patients disproportionately affected by these risk factors (e.g., Black, Hispanic/Latino), have worse disease control with greater adverse effects.

Intern Project(s): The summer intern will be responsible for making phone calls and potentially sending letters, email and text communication for recruitment of patients into the study. The intern may also be asked to help with other activities involved in executing the study such as data management, data analysis, or writing reports.
