Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Research Technician to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by assisting with neurophysiology studies using animal models. You will oversee surgical, experimental, and general daily activities in the Neuro Mechatronics labs. You will be responsible for setting up the experimental apparatus, maintaining inventory, documentation, animal training, data collection, management, and analysis in collaboration with researchers, veterinarians, husbandry, and facilities staff.

Core Responsibilities:

Coordinating, setting up for, and running daily experiments (i.e., collecting experimental data).Coordinating, setting for and assisting surgical procedures.Behavioral training using positive reinforcement and standardized best practices.Maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment, stocking supplies, ordering, inventory and documentationCoordinating apparatus design, build and refinement.Maintaining equipment and instruments to ensure they are properly cared for and function correctly.Initiating repair or maintenance of equipment and instruments, as necessary.Maintaining laboratory and animal health records.Monitoring and performing post-operative care of research subjectsMaintaining the lab safety plan and safety data sheets as necessary; scheduling safety training for new hires or team members entering new roles; enforcing policies around personal protective equipment.Ability to work well with others and/or as part of a team.Ability to respond to and manage emergency situations and/or crises.Ability to work with sensitive information, maintain confidentiality and use discretion.Ability to pay close attention to detail; keep and maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.Ability to maintain composure when dealing with difficult situations and/or individuals.Ability to meet deadlines; work under pressure and with frequent interruptions.Ability to understand and follow directions.Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.Visual acuity to perform activities such as extended use of a computer monitor, extensive reading, transcribing, analyzing data and figures, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines, using measurement devices, and/or assembly of parts at distances close to the eye.Requires wide range of mobility, i.e., ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach, bend at waist, grasp and pick up objects, maneuver in cramped areas, perform minor repairs to equipment, stand for long periods of time, lift and carry equipment and other heavy materials up to 50 lbs.Adaptability and openness to change as the department and organization evolves.Possible hours on weekends and holidays.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in the medical or biological sciences or Associate’s degree plus veterinary technician certificate.A minimum of two years of research experience preferably in the medical, animal, or biological sciencesPrior animal care and handling.Experience with perioperative care and/or anesthesia monitoring.A highly motivated individual with strong organizational, interpersonal skills with experience in experimental data collection and analysisA combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Requirements:

Successful background checkCertification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is preferred.
