The College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at Utah State University seeks a Research Technician III to assist with laboratory and field research activities in the field of soil health, carbon stocks and sustainable agriculture.  This position is funded for three years and may be longer contingent upon funding.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include collecting and processing soil and plant samples in the field, greenhouse and laboratory and data entry, quality control and analysis. Additional responsibilities will include the day to day management of the laboratory, training of student research assistants, managing inventories and equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in horticulture, agronomy, plant science, soil science or other agricultural related science OR an equivalent combination of experience and education.Experience in laboratory procedures including wet chemistry and or molecular biology.Experience in or ability to learn field plot maintenance and data collection and processing.Interest and ability to assist with the day-to-day training of undergraduate students.Ability to perform general agricultural related labor including navigating uneven terrain and tolerating extreme weather conditions, dust, and pollen. Good personal and communication skills.Experience in laboratory management.Self-motivated.Reliable.Ability to work outside in adverse weather.Attention to detail.Experience using basic computer programs such as Excel, Word and PPT to process data, communicate and document research.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

An MS degree in soil science, plant science or related field.Two years of experience in a related field.Experience in data collection, data processing, quality control and analysis using software such as SAS and ArcGIS is strongly preferred. Interest and experience in organic and or sustainable agriculture is desirable. The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).  

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 25 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
