The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability Research Computing Team members provide technology resources and consultative support for our faculty and research community members. Team members closely collaborate with our researchers to understand current and future technology requirements and design and deliver solutions and support services that align and scale with these needs.
The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability is hiring a full-time Research Technology Consultant to join our team. The focus of this role will be to work directly with our faculty and their respective research team members in a technical and consultative capacity to assist them with their computational research.
Your Responsibilities will include:
+ Work as a key member of our research computing team supporting the school’s growing research community.
+ Work productively and independently with faculty (Principal Investigators) and members of their respective research teams to understand their current and future research needs and align research workloads with appropriate technology resources.
+ Provide leadership and expert consultation to researchers regarding technical requirements and capabilities in optimizing their use of technology including on-campus and cloud-based resources.
+ Lead the development of resources, seminars, courses, or workshops to disseminate information about uses of technology. Lead educational workshops for researchers on various topics such as Machine Learning, use of code repositories etc.
+ Develop documentation and instructional materials on efficient use of job scheduling and submission parameters, use of software compilers and code stacks, data management strategies etc.
+ Familiarize new faculty and research team members with the school’s portfolio of technology resources and provide on-boarding instruction and assistance.
+ Consult with faculty and researchers on data repositories and resources, guiding them in selecting and utilizing appropriate options for their research needs.
+ Liaise with colleagues in other university schools and departments and 3rd party solution providers to share best practices and emerging trends in the application of research computing technology. May lead complex academic research technology projects with wide impact at the university.

**To be successful in this position, you will need** **:**
+ An advanced degree plus seven years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
+ Ability to quickly adopt new technologies and programming tools.
+ Strong understanding of data design, architecture, relational databases and data modeling.
+ Demonstrated experience in designing applications or tools; thorough understanding of software development life cycle and quality control practices; demonstrated experience with object-oriented programming, scripting, and/or relational databases.
+ Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.
+ Outstanding communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
+ Demonstrated experience leading activities on structured team development projects
+ Ability to recognize and recommend necessary changes in user and/or operations procedures.
+ Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with members of the academic community; demonstrated experience working in an environment with colleagues of diverse backgrounds and customs.
+ Demonstrated expertise with instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues, and best practices for classroom, online, and hybrid learning.
+ Excellent time management and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to manage a complex workload, prioritize tasks, and use good judgment in providing services based on goals.
+ Excellent leadership skills.
+ In addition, our preferred requirements include:
+ Familiarity in the research process and publication process.
+ High-Performance Computing Experience with parallel programming models such as MPI, OpenMP, and job scheduling systems such as SLURM.
+ Programming & Scripting Proficiency in at least one scripting language such as Python, Bash, Perl, R and MATLAB
+ Ability to assess computational workloads and profile code to identify performance bottlenecks and improve efficiency.
+ Experience with File Systems and Scientific Data Formats such as HDF5, NetCDF, GeoTIFF etc.
+ Advanced oral and written communication skills critical for explaining complex technical concepts to researchers with varying levels of technical expertise. This includes active listening and appropriately tailoring explanations to the audience.
+ Machine Learning/AI: Experience with machine learning algorithms, deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and model training.
+ Operating Systems and Networking: A solid understanding of Linux/Unix systems administration, networking concepts and security best practices.
+ Experience in creating and using containers such as Docker, Singularity or other UNIX container systems
+ Curiosity & Continuous Learning: The field of research computing is constantly evolving, so a strong desire to learn and adapt is crucial
+ Knowledge of Stanford University systems and policies

**The expected pay range for this position is $114,125, to $150,000 per annum.**
