This is a full-time, 37.5-hours-per-week position over 12 months, with the possibility of extension beyond this initial 12-month period. The hourly salary is $30.41/hour for individuals new to state service and is non-negotiable. These positions offer a full benefits package including medical and dental insurance. This is a non-exempt position, eligible for overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and university policy. The role requires spending an average of 100 days per year at sea, with an average of 4.5 hours of overtime each day at sea, and 12 hours of overtime on weekends and holidays. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES + Maintains an adequate stock of supplies + Responsible for all maintenance and troubleshooting for onboard mechanical systems- including but not limited to diesel, HVAC, Plumbing, and electrical. + Stands a watch + Constructs and repairs specialized equipment + Operate cranes, winches, davits and forklifts + Keeps records and prepares reports; + Performs related duties as required. Other Examples of Duties: + Diagnoses and troubleshoots electronic navigation systems including global positioning systems and radar; + Acts as ship's pilot, navigating and commanding assigned ships; KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY + Knowledge of all types of navigational equipment; + Considerable knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of engines and ancillary equipment of powered vessels; + Skills + interpersonal skills; + oral and written communication skills; + in operating machine shop equipment; + Ability to + repair and construct equipment as needed; + utilize computer software. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – GENERAL EXPERIENCE + Four (4) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel engine inboard motor vessels operating both in offshore and coastal waters. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS + Experience operating shipboard cranes and winches. + Experience operating forklifts. + Experience in similar roles on research vessels and working with scientists. + QMED or other USCG engineering license. + USCG Master/mate 150 ton. + Completion of STCW 95 Basic Safety Training. + Formal training in mechanical systems. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS + May be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain a QMED or other engineering license. + May be required to obtain and maintain STCW Basic certification within 3 months of hire. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS + Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform their duties. + A physical examination may be required. + Must be able to climb ladders and steep steps. + Must be able to maneuver in tight spaces including tanks. May require kneeling and crawling. + Participation in USCG-approved random drug testing program. WORKING CONDITIONS + Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and to discomfort from extreme weather conditions, noise, and fumes. + The vessel operates 24 hours a day and may be away from its home port for up to two weeks at a time. + Expected to reside in shared onboard accommodations with fellow crew members.
