RESIDENTIAL COUNSELOR

 

Responsible for the supervision of  residents during the overnight shift assuring that each student is accounted for and behaviors are appropriate.

This is an awake shift. Must be alert and active the entire shift (No sleeping, No dozing).

Responsible for writing a night log which starts at the beginning of each shift and ends upon departure from the unit in A.M.

The following information must be documented in the Night Log:

Date and signature of employee working.

Accurate head count. All residents who are present as well as noting residents who are not on unit, noting their whereabouts, i.e. home, awol, infirmary etc.

Room checks must be logged with time indicated. Room checks must be made every 15 minutes until all residents are asleep.

When unit is quiet, and all residents are asleep, room checks to occur every hour.

All resident movement must be noted, i.e., bathroom use, water, nurse, etc.

All unusual incidents must be noted with detailed information in log, i.e. sickness, nightmares, behavioral problems, etc.

Anyone entering the unit must be logged, staff or students, with full names. Times of arrival and departure to be indicated.

Responsible for documenting all significant events in an accurate and timely manner on Incident/Accident Reports and Informational reports.

Responsible for reporting all incidents of abuse/neglect as part of your role as a Mandated Reporter.

Follows proper procedures for reporting damage or physical plant needs, submits work orders to overnight supervisor.

Provides immediate therapeutic crisis intervention in order to provide structure and discipline in line with the Agency policies.

Adheres to the agency discipline policy and implements behavior management system within guidelines established.

Responsible to supervise activities of daily living in the AM hours i.e., hygiene, appropriate dress, cleanliness of rooms.

Escorts and supervises the residents down to Nurses office for medication.

Escorts residents down to school weekday mornings giving accurate head count, proper turnover information to the daytime residential counselor

Follows all policy and procedures for fire drills and evacuation, documenting on fire drill report

Provides transportation of residents needing medical attention when necessary.

Attends in-service training sessions and staff meetings as required by the agency Completes all LMS trainings as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications - External

Minimum High School Diploma

Ability to care for children

Valid N.Y.S. Drivers License.

Acceptable clearance checks for State Central Register, Justice Center, Driver license and fingerprinting as required by the program.

Compliance with health regulations for physical/mantoux testing.

This position requires successful completion of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training, which includes a written test and demonstration of the competency to perform physical restraints, as specified by the program and regulatory body. Additionally, staff must successfully complete all required TCI refreshers in order to maintain continued employment
