Respiratory Educator and Coordinator

Job Description:

Supports Lahey Hospital & Medical Center’s mission vision, strategic plans, goals through education and quality initiatives; works under the direction of the Director of Respiratory Care to establish goals and expectations. Exhibits a visionary, open mind approach and helps foster change to keep the department current with a wide degree of creativity and latitude. Establishes and nurtures positive relationships between respiratory care staff, providers, and other departments. Promote team approach, optimal quality and patient centric care, supports an environment that encourages innovative approaches to care, and continuous improvement. This position represents and promotes the respiratory care department across the organization.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

1. Provides direct patient care under physician orders and within the scope of services and licensure.

2. Works collaboratively with providers, nurses, and other clinical staff.

3. Ensure compliance with department and hospital policies, guidelines, procedures, and protocols.

4. Provides leadership and guidance to the department; make decisions, solve problems, assist with policy implementation and ongoing education.

5. Supervise and monitor respiratory care practitioners’ performance inclusive of patient assessment and documentation in the EMR, medication administration documentation, patient interaction and education regarding disease and medication management.

6. Offer coaching, mentorship, ongoing education to staff; identify areas for improvement and make plans to implement performance improvement initiatives.

7. Assist or manage the employee hiring process; develop performance expectations, identify essential functions and knowledge, skills and abilities required; respond to questions, support staff in clinical decision making and staff development.

8. Serves as a health care team member by maintaining excellent communication with other disciplines.

9. Provide corrective action, make recommendations regarding promotions, demotions, raises, hiring, firing, and escalate issues to an appropriate level and within chain of command.

10. Discipline staff when necessary and in consultation with manager and human resources.

11. Prepare, assign, modify work assignments according to patient acuity, authorize overtime and recommend staffing changes and adjustments, approve time off, sign off on payroll record keeping.

12. Orient new staff, assist with staff development, in-service training, competencies and teaching, coach, counsel and motivate employees, investigate complaints or performance concerns, evaluate employees, provide effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation.

13. Collaborate with managers in communicating, disseminating and interpreting information.

14. Assists ventilated patients during transport.

15. Organizes and manages time and workflow effectively.

16. Maintains a patient focused and centric approach.

17. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems.

18. Plan, prepare, and provide educational presentations including use of PowerPoint, disseminate information to respiratory staff, and present to various professional audiences, and community groups.

19. Maintain knowledge of updates within the profession, and understanding of established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Develop and revise policies and procedures reflective of evidence based information, utilize a variety of means to obtain information (web based professional organizations, library, pub med, etc.).

20. Prepare and provide staff competencies, motivate and teach others.

21. Enhance department by providing staff development expertise as an educator and facilitator. Work collaboratively and constructively to help staff attain professional goals.

22. Promote professional development of all staff members through mentoring, supporting attendance at educational offerings, and participation in departmental, hospital and external projects.

23. Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Assist with development of projects, procedures, etc. to meet regulatory requirements.

24. Ensure safety of equipment and sufficient supplies, reports potential issues or concerns

25. Encourage and support staff with research projects.

26. Support an environment that encourages innovative approaches to care, continuous improvement.

27. Provide monthly quality metric statistics to the team and update respiratory quality dashboard monthly

28. Performs all duties and responsibilities of respiratory care practitioner as needed.

29. Performs all other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor's degree required. Masters degree preferred.

Licensure, Certification, Registration:

· Registered respiratory therapist by the NBRC required

· Massachusetts license as a respiratory therapist required

· ACLS certification required

· Member of the AARC

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Excellent interpersonal skills

Working knowledge of PC’s

Excellent Oral and Written Communication skills

Ability to impart specialized clinical and medical information to members of the health care team; physician, nurses

Experience:

-7 years of experience or more as a respiratory therapist preferred.

-Recent experience in a tertiary academic medical center desired and highly recommended. Experience at a level I trauma center preferred.
