Summary:
The Respiratory Therapist shall perform all routine therapies, arterial blood gases, ventilator care and routine pulmonary screening as described in the policy and procedures manual. The therapist may also be required to assist with day to day staffing of the department.
Experience/Education Requirements:
A graduate of an AMA-approved Respiratory Therapist program.
Experience in Respiratory Therapy preferred.
License or Certification Requirements:
· CRT/RRT through NBRC is required.
· Must have the current State of Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
· Certification must be up to date with the NBRC.
· BLS required.
· NRP, ACLS, and PALS are required within 6 months of hire.
· CPR required.
Responsibilities:
· Assist with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
· Conduct pulmonary function tests for patients as ordered by physician at the bedside.
· Deliver and set up equipment and monitor patients on equipment.
· Do nasotracheal and tracheal (endotracheal tube or tracheostomy) suctioning & trach care.
· Perform patient evaluation.
· Performs arterial blood gas puncture and processing.
· Provide respiratory therapy to patients as ordered.
· Suggest alternative therapy as appropriate.
· May perform pulmonary function testing and additional diagnostic testing as ordered by provider.

Lifting of patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment.
· Lifting equipment - carry 25'- 150' waist high (IV bags, patient trays).
· Carry charts 25'- 150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh over 35 lbs.
· Carry fire extinguishers up or down 3-4 flights of stairs and several yards in an emergency.
