Respiratory Therapist

Job Summary

Assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities, including the supervision of respiratory therapy students. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check, and operate equipment. Respiratory Therapists assigned to the pulmonary functions lab, responsible for performing diagnostic cardiopulmonary evaluations and respiratory therapy treatments designed to care for patients with deficiencies and dysfunctions of the cardiopulmonary system. The Pulmonary function technologists primarily perform diagnostic tests. These tests can include spirometry, diffusion testing, lung volumes, airway resistance, respiratory muscle forces, bronchial provocation testing, assisting with bronchoscopy, CPX testing and other tests that a doctor orders. They must also be able to calibrate, clean and maintain diagnostic equipment and recognize when equipment malfunctions.

Essential Functions

Measures lung capacity and analyzes blood samples using a blood gas analyzer.Delivers and assesses response to ordered therapy per plan of care. Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.Evaluates respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices.Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance. Assesses patient condition and delivers appropriate treatment.Educates the patient and family about the patient's illness and provides information about community support groups and other resources.Monitors, receives, stocks, and distributes respiratory care supplies and medical gas cylinders.Maintains storage areas with required supply levels and equipment.Disassembles, cleans, and sterilizes equipment, and performs preventative maintenance and calibration of machines.Fully functioning in neonatal.

Minimum Education

Associate’s Degree (or equivalent technician program) in Respiratory Care required.

Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Care preferred.

 

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) required

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (within 3 months of date of hire or transfer)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (within 3 months of date of hire or transfer)

NRP (within 3 months of date of hire or transfer)

Licenses: Requires current North Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner license (RCP)

 

Minimum Work Experience

3 years experience as a RRT preferred.
