Summary of Position
• Evaluate and treat patients with sleep and breathing disorders including administering pulmonary function testing (PFT) and
providing other respiratory-related care and treatment as prescribed by a licensed physician.
• Interact regularly with patients and their families, performing tests and educating them about medicines/treatment related
to pulmonary function and sleep disorders.
Principal Accountabilities
Pulmonary Testing –
• Administer pulmonary function testing, including complete PFT, Methacholine Challenges, Expired Nitric Oxide,
Spirometry, Flow Volume loops with and without bronchodilator.
• Administer six-minute walk test, Oximetry pulse studies, 02 therapy, and Nebulizer treatment.
• Review pulmonary function studies with medical staff and physicians. Complete reports for pulmonary function tests
and distribute to the pulmonologists.
• Educate patients regarding pulmonary medications and use of oxygen.
• Train staff on performing pulmonary function testing.
• Maintain pulmonary department equipment and associated supplies.
• Pulmonary testing equipment calibration and maintenance.
Sleep Medicine –
• Review sleep results and recommended plan of care with patients and order DME (durable medical equipment) sleep
equipment as instructed by Pulmonologist. Follow up with related DME vendor as required.
• Download efficacy / compliance reports.
• Address patient sleep related questions and concerns and schedule follow up visits .
• Meet with patients to review and document patient self-reported efficacy and comfort with PAP device and mask
fitting prior to being seen by Pulmonologist.
• Educate patients regarding sleep testing and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment, positive airway pressure (PAP)
equipment use, maintenance and care.
• Coordinate patient testing with sleep testing vendors.
• Obtain completed test results and maintain/ update Sleep Results Reporting Tracking Grid.
• Educate staff regarding handheld inhaler/spacer devices.
• Perform other job-related duties as required to include faxing and correspondence with DME vendors.
Education, Training, Licenses, Certifications
• Associate’s degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
• Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
Relevant Work Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• 2 – 4 years’ experience as Respiratory Therapist (R)
• Experience in calibrating PFT equipment and test administration (R)
• Familiarity with SensorMedics Vmax Spectra respiratory analysis system (R)
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills (R)
• Strong organizational and time management skills (R)
• Experience with the application of positive airway pressure in the care of patients with sleep disorders (P)
