JOB TYPE

PRN requirements are a minimum two (2) twelve (12) hour shifts every 6 weeks.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Respiratory Therapist serves as an intricate member of the healthcare team at UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper by establishing an authentic personalized relationship with the patient and their chosen support system, collaborating with physicians and other team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualized respiratory plan of care that promotes optimal health or a comforting peaceful death. The Registered Respiratory Therapist utilizes best scientific evidence and compassion to assist the patient in navigating their health journey. The Registered Respiratory Therapist accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with the current policies and procedures.

Collaboration: Participates in the teaching and counseling of patients and their support system.  

Possesses the ability to prioritize job duties according to patients' needs and changing acuity levels.   Administers and evaluates medication therapies, performs patient transfers, and transports patients via wheelchair, hospital bed, or stretcher to other departments. 

Communication and Documentation: Communicates individualized plan of care and patient's progress toward goals to all members of the care team, including the patient and his/her chosen support system. 

Utilizes appropriate communication tools when communicating within the interdisciplinary team and when handing off patient care.   Documents appropriate information within a timely manner. 

Professional Accountability/Evidence Based Practice: Maintain clinical and professional competencies according to department policies.  

Practices according to the state requirements and standards.   Engages in self-reflection and develops personal goals to enhance knowledge, obtain professional certification, or pursue academic degree.   Integrates gained knowledge into practice. 

Quality Improvement: Intervenes when standards of care are not met.  

Makes suggestions and helps with implementation of improvement processes.   Monitors and implements procedures relevant to job safety.  

Teamwork: Develops and maintains positive relationships with team members/internal customers.  

Demonstrates a willingness to adjust activities to accommodate the needs of team members/internal customers.   Resolves conflicts independently, as appropriate.   Accepts responsibility for actions and acts positively upon feedback from others.  

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associate's Degree/Certificate required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Experience: Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure: Registered by National Board of Respiratory Care and current RCP licensure in applicable state required. BLS required upon hire. ACLS, NRP, and PALS to be completed within 90 days of hire date. CRT or RRT. VA State Licensure. 

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Completes 2 Respiratory Care competencies/year.

Work Function/Activity: Medium to Heavy Physical Demand

The job requires standing and walking constantly and frequently bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.
