Respiratory Therapist - Part-Time

Position Summary
Under the combined administrative supervision of the Medical Director and the Clinical supervision of the President and CEO, the Respiratory Therapist (RT) is responsible to follow the guidelines to assess respiratory needs and provide respiratory care to the individuals served. The Respiratory Therapist is also responsible to formulate and implement training programs for appropriate staff, participate in the interdisciplinary treatment team process, and provide hands-on respiratory treatment for individuals with chronic respiratory problems. Respiratory Therapist continuously monitors the treatments and reassessment and recommends changes as necessary. Respiratory Therapist is responsible for direct contact with outside Pulmonologists on the care and treatment for high-risk individuals.
The Respiratory Therapist demonstrates knowledge of Richmond’s quality mission, vision, and values. In addition, this position actively participates in quality improvement projects (i.e. communicating issues, offering suggestions) to ensure ongoing excellence of Richmond residents, staff, and programs.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Evaluates appropriate individuals to assess their condition and establish norms for treatment. Reviews the current equipment used at RCs.
2. Provides direct treatment for individuals with chronic respiratory problems, e.g., nebulizer treatments, changing tracheotomies, conducting pulmonary function tests, inhalations, aerosol therapy, etc.
3. Coordinates and determines referral to pulmonary clinic. Implements approved recommendations of pulmonologists.
4. Develops and facilitates a train-the-trainer program for nurses, DSP supervisors, and residence managers on the following:
+ Common respiratory illnesses and problems that arise due to respiratory disorders, e.g., scoliosis,
+ etc.
+ Current applicable respiratory interventions.
+ Preventive protocols and bronchial hygiene.
+ How to recognize and monitor for signs of respiratory distress.
+ Appropriate use and maintenance of equipment, e.g., nebulizers, oxygen contractors, phlegm fighters, oxygen tanks, suction machines, BiPAP machines, pulse oximeters, air compressors for humidification of air, etc.
+ Respiratory medication and its indication for use.
5. Participates in the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (ITT) process by providing feedback orally, and/or in writing, regarding individuals’ conditions; develops and submits individualized treatment plans, for individuals served on the respective teams that are integrated with other therapies and activities to ensure optimal benefit; and follows up with periodic progress notes. This requires the ability to read and write using the English language.
6. Provides an overview for Direct Support staff of respiratory therapy, equipment, treatment and prevention, as appropriate using the guidelines for treatments and support they provide.
7. Recommends policy and procedure manual for use by nurses and supervisory staff in training other staff in respiratory therapy.
8. Attends screening of applicants for admission as deemed necessary.
9. Formulates recommendations for future training, staffing and equipment needed at RCC.
10. Write progress notes at least weekly and submits required documentation to Medical and Director
of Nursing at least quarterly.
11. Accompanies individuals with chronic respiratory problems on medical appointments and recreational activities if deemed necessary by the medical staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
A certificate in respiratory therapy from an accredited school, and a New York State license in respiratory therapy required.
A current CPR Certificate
A current NYS infection control certificate
Experience:
Experience working with people with developmental disabilities and chronic respiratory problems preferred.
Compensation: $32.00-$36.04 commensurate with experience.
