Job Summary:

In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Program Manager or designate and collaborating with the Respiratory Therapy Professional Practice Leader (PPL) and Professional Practice Coordinator (PPC), the RT Educator, NICU/PICU acts as a clinical resource for respiratory therapists and the interdisciplinary team and learners.  Assists and supports respiratory therapists to deliver quality care for an identified patient population by providing information based on theory/practice, assessing clinical/technical skills. The RT Educator, NICU/PICU is a knowledge translator and change agent who is accountable for promoting excellence in clinical practice and quality patient care. Supports and participates in direct patient care as appropriate, in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    In collaboration with Professional Practice Leader & Professional Practice Coordinator plans, implements and evaluates educational and clinical programs to meet the learning needs of respiratory therapy staff including orientation, clinical teaching and inservice. Develops and reviews instructional materials. Maintains program records.

2.    Participates in the performance and skill assessment of staff from an education perspective. Develops skill assessment programs. Certifies staff in specialized skills.

3.    Acts as a clinical role model and resource for staff and division in the area of expertise. Participates in educational and clinical audits. Participates in Quality Improvement projects as a leader, facilitator or team member.

4.    Provides education to learners, respiratory therapists, medical staff, nursing and other health professionals on respiratory therapy related clinical practice, equipment, policies and procedures.

5.    Participates in the development, communication and evaluation of standards, procedures and protocols. Participates in selected Respiratory research activities. Facilitates changes in Respiratory practice.

6.    Conducts education, workshop and conference sessions. Presents ideas at rounds, workshops and conferences.

7.    Communicates and consults with other educators. Acts as a clinical resource to community hospitals and agencies.

8.    Collaborates with other disciplines in providing institute wide education programs. Participates in developing an annual education plan. Participates in clinical committees and councils.

9.    Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Graduate of an approved school of Respiratory Therapy.
•    Three (3) years recent related experience in a Pediatric/Neonatal tertiary care facility including leadership activities or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
•    Successful completion of Canadian Board of Respiratory Care Examinations.
•    Eligible for registration (RRT) with the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT).
•    Eligible for registration with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT)
•    Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for patient population
