I. Major Responsibilities:

1.  Coordinates clinical practice and deployment of resources to ensure implementation of respiratory care processes, adherence to standards, and compliance with regulatory standards.  Assesses the number and competency level of staff in each assigned area and adjusts staffing appropriately to meet patient care needs.  Supervises work responsibilities to ensure optimal patient outcomes and satisfaction.  Coordinates staff schedules and staff development and educational activities.  Participates in equal share of on call with other supervisors.
2.  Identifies issues in respiratory care delivery and seeks solutions for problems.  Documents actions taken.  Resolves operational issues and evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.  Demonstrates decision-making skills by establishing priorities and initiating actions. 
3.  Maintains safe operation of respiratory care equipment by adhering to hospital safety regulations.  Evaluates new equipment, coordinates inventory of equipment and supplies, troubleshoots and coordinates equipment repairs and preventive maintenance with Biomedical Engineering.
4.  Works with the Manager and Director to develop and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and objectives and ensures respiratory care practice standards and health and safety requirements are met.  Keeps Respiratory Care Manager and Director informed of workloads, changes in patient and employee needs, and other personnel or operational problems.
5.  Accomplishes respiratory care human resource objectives by providing and coordinating orientation and required training.  Communicates job expectations, resolves grievances, and actively participates and completes evaluations of staff performance and attendance.  Provides disciplinary action as appropriate in collaboration with Manager and/or Director.  Makes recommendations on transfers, promotions, salary changes, terminations, and similar actions.
6.  Designs, organizes, implements, and evaluates orientation, in-service, and continuing education programs for staff in assigned areas, and ensures that staff attains defined competencies.
7.  Participates in strategic planning, implementation, evaluation, and revision of systems to support and enhance the competence, autonomy, and accountability of the respiratory care staff.  
8.  Provides input to the preparation of the annual capital and operating budgets related to staffing and equipment needs.  Maintains the efficient daily operations of the department within budget parameters.  Exercises cost-containment strategies and educates staff in such practices.  Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.
9.  Develops expertise of respiratory care staff with patients and patient populations.
10. Develops curricula, instructional materials, tests, and evaluation tools, evaluates commercially produced materials, and maintains current educational supplies and equipment.  Makes changes to the curricula based on feedback and current clinical and/or educational evidence.  
11. Promotes evidence-based educational methods and technologies that support development of respiratory care expertise.
12. Ensures staff has current licensure and credentials.  Ensures staff meets required competencies for respiratory care practice.
13. Coordinates student clinical experiences with faculty from respiratory care schools and other disciplines that utilize our clinical site for education.
14. Keeps current on best practice standards of respiratory care practice and education.  Identifies policies, standards, and practices not in compliance with current standards and communicates needed revisions through respiratory and critical care leadership.
15. Assists Director, Manager, and other respiratory care staff with projects and activities that support respiratory care initiatives.  Supports/participates in current research activities that involve respiratory care responsibilities. 
16. Fosters a collaborative professional relationship with physicians, nursing and all hospital disciplines to assure effective operations, development of best practice standards and quality patient care.

Standard Supervisor Level Responsibilities:

1.  Supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.  Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.  Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
2.  Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
3.  Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
4.  Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
5.  Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
6.  Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
7.  Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc.  Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
8.  Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
9.  Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
10. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
11. Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.
12. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. Licensure by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Respiratory Therapist.  
2. Minimum of a two year Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Care.  
3. Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from the NBRC.
4. Current BLS certification (AHA)

Preferred:
1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. NRP certification

Experience/Skill:

Required:
1.  Two years of experience in a supervisory/leadership role.
2.  Thorough knowledge of the specialized field of respiratory care.      
3.  Must have solid technical knowledge of operation of various respiratory equipment modalities and specialty devices.  
4.  Respects and maintains the confidentiality of patient related information.  Works independently.  
5.  Possesses strong time management skills. 
6.  Ability to write accurate and concise clinical documents.  
7.  Ability to collect and analyze data using statistical methods.   
8.  Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to problem-solve.  
9.  Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the department and with department customers. 
10. Ability to work in multiple computer platforms simultaneously, excellent computer skills.

Preferred:
1. Minimum of three to five years’ experience in critical and acute care.
2. PICU/NICU experience strongly preferred.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a patient care and office environment.
