Job Description: Retail Pharmacy Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC)

Position Summary:
The Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the retail pharmacy which includes the meds to beds program, the indigent program, nursing home dispensing, hospice dispensing, home health dispensing and employee prescriptions. The PIC ensures that all pharmacy activities comply with state and federal regulations, and providing excellent patient care. The PIC leads the pharmacy team, ensuring efficient and safe dispensing of medications, counseling patients, managing inventory, and maintaining high-quality customer service standards. The PIC plays a critical role in achieving business goals while maintaining the integrity and reputation of the pharmacy. The PIC will work alongside peers within and outside the pharmacy to ensure strong foundational medication management across the organization. The PIC will be the permit holder for the retail pharmacy.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Supervision: Supervise and manage the pharmacy team, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and support staff. Ensure adherence to pharmacy policies, procedures, and ethical standards. Provide training and development opportunities for staff to enhance performance and compliance. Foster a collaborative, positive, and professional work environment. Dispensing & Patient Care: Oversee the accurate dispensing of prescription medications and over-the-counter products. Ensure proper medication counseling, including drug information, dosage instructions, side effects, and interactions. Provide advice on health and wellness topics, including immunizations, disease management, and lifestyle changes. Monitor patient profiles for potential drug interactions, allergies, and other issues that may affect patient safety. Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance: Ensure all operations comply with applicable local, state, and federal pharmacy laws and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FDA, DEA). Maintain pharmacy licenses and other required documentation. Implement and enforce policies for medication storage, handling, and disposal in compliance with regulatory standards. Conduct regular audits and reviews to maintain the quality of service and medication safety. Inventory Management: Oversee inventory management, including ordering medications, supplies, and ensuring proper stock levels. Monitor product expiry dates and rotate stock to minimize waste. Coordinate with suppliers and manage vendor relationships to ensure timely delivery of stock and competitive pricing. Customer Service & Patient Relations: Provide exceptional customer service by addressing patient concerns, questions, and complaints in a timely and professional manner. Promote the pharmacy's services. Maintain positive relationships with patients, healthcare providers, and community members to enhance the pharmacy’s reputation. Financial & Business Operations: Help drive profitability through cost-effective practices, accurate dispensing, and optimization of staffing levels. Monitor and report prescription volume, sales targets, and other metrics to meet or exceed business goals. Assist in budget preparation and control pharmacy expenses. Staff Scheduling & Workflow Management: Develop and manage work schedules to ensure adequate staffing and maintain operational efficiency. Manage workflow and ensure proper delegation of tasks among pharmacy staff. Collaboration with Healthcare Providers: Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care for patients. Communicate with prescribers regarding medication therapies, medication errors, and formulary issues. Safety & Risk Management: Investigate and resolve medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and any patient safety concerns. Ensure proper medication handling and compounding procedures are followed to avoid contamination or errors. Continuing Education: Stay current with new medications, industry trends, and pharmacy practices. Participate in professional development opportunities and continuing education to maintain licensure and enhance pharmacy knowledge.Qualifications:
Education: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an accredited school of pharmacy. Licensure & Certification: Active and unrestricted pharmacist license in the state of Mississippi. Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience as a pharmacist, including experience in a retail or community pharmacy setting. Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role is highly preferred. Skills & Competencies: Strong knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations, and best practices. Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of professionals. Proficiency in pharmacy software systems (e.g., Pioneer, QS/1, or similar).Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for long periods of time. Ability to lift and carry boxes or medications weighing up to 25 lbs. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the pharmacy hours.Work Environment:
Retail pharmacy setting with exposure to varying customer volumes. Typical shifts involve interactions with both patients and pharmacy staff, along with handling medications and performing administrative duties. This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours for meetings or special projects. The Director will work in a hospital environment with potential exposure to hazardous materials and medications.
