Farmingdale State College (FSC) currently seeks a full-time TRIO Student Support Services Counselor. TRIO is a federal grant funded program intended to serve underrepresented students with the primary goal of increasing the college retention and graduation rates of participants. TRIO serves low-income, first-generation, and students with a documented disability. The program has a long-standing history of dedicated service toward the mission of guiding, supporting and advocating on behalf of its students as they pursue excellence within higher education. As participants of these programs, students have access to a myriad of services including academic and pre-professional counseling, tutoring, experiential learning and cultural experiences, educational workshops, leadership development, advocacy and special events.
The TRIO Counselor will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
+ Provision of comprehensive support services to a designated caseload of students, including individual and small group counseling focused on academic, financial, personal and pre-professional guidance.
+ Assessing student risk factors and guiding students in the use of available resources and creation of academic action plans to promote student retention and success.
+ Working collaboratively with campus departments such as disability student services, financial aid, registrar, and academic offices to provide wrap around student services.
The TRIO Counselor will provide guidance, support, and advocacy to help students meet their full potential and excel within higher education. They will assist:
+ with coordination and implementation of group activities and special events.
+ with assessment of student performance and program outcomes.
+ with planning and implementation of the summer orientation program for new and transfer students.
+ with recruitment efforts and applicant review to verify program eligibility.
+ with coordination of, and chaperoning of, occasional student field trips.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in higher education, counseling, or related field.
+ Knowledge of the history, purpose, and goals of opportunity programs.
+ Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
+ Ability to work within a college-related setting supporting student development and success.
+ Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends and travel for program events.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ A Master's degree.
+ A minimum of 3 years relevant experience working within a college-related setting supporting student development and success.
+ Experience working with a diverse student population.
+ Knowledge of the SUNY system, financial aid process, first year experience programming, and general resources available to students within higher education.
+ Prior experience with a student information database application, such as Banner.
+ Proficiency in computer systems, including Microsoft Office.
+ Creative, organized, and motivated individual interested in student development.

This is a full-time Research Foundation position.
