As a Risk and Sustainability Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting the day-to-day functions that keep the park running smoothly. Job Summary: The Risk and Sustainability Specialist will be a liaison who works closely with Hotel Management and various departments to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards. The position involves conducting audits, presenting at meetings, supporting incident reporting, and implementing environmental management systems. Additionally, the role focuses on improving environmental awareness among employees through various initiatives and projects, while also serving as a key communicator between regional operations and sustainability/risk management departments. Responsibilities Work alongside Hotel Management as an Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) liaison between Regional Operations and the Sustainability and Risk Management Departments. Attend bi-weekly EHS/Safety meetings as the EHS issue expert. Report on issues and support where possible. Present risk and environmental tailgates to the EHS/Safety Leads and evaluate effectiveness. Support Learning and Development Department by presenting the EHS portion of new employee orientation (weekly). Assist Claims Administrator and Operations on incident reports and injuries, including followups, claims tracking, and addressing issues identified in reports. Conduct secondary audit on monthly safety inspections and mentor Operations on audit process and follow-up to ensure compliance with OSHA. Coordinate location-wide implementation of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System requirements including, Pollution Prevention Program, Hazardous and Universal Waste compliance, EHS Signage (including Live Life), relevant training programs, etc. Conduct daily visual assessments of EHS programs to identify areas for improvement, including back-of-house and front-of-house recycling sorting, implementation of best sustainability and safety practices, chemical storage, etc. Actively communicate with employees at assigned location to cultivate ideas for EHS programs. Improve focus on environmental awareness among the employee population by collaborating with YCERP on cleanup projects, promoting GreenStar, and generally inducing stoke. Work directly with Sustainability and/or Risk Department to implement a location-specific project by the end of your season. (Season project). Qualifications Be at least 21 years of age by the appointment start date (in order to obtain DOT Driving Certificate). Have a valid driver’s license, and a good driving record. Must have a passion for national parks and public lands. Ability to live in a remote, rural environment. Available to complete a six-month appointment (roughly mid-April through the end of October). Have completed or will complete a degree in (STEM): Environmental Science, Biological Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a similar relevant bachelor’s degree. Passionate about and have the desire to pursue a career and/or post-graduate degree as an environmental, sustainability, or health & safety-related professional. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to professionally and effectively share information, including in group settings. Proven leadership skills, academic or professional, with the ability to collaborate and build relationships in adverse settings. Experience, academic or professional, completing projects with a group of diverse individuals. Ability to take ownership and work independently to solve problems with competing time-lines. Possess a proactive approach to accomplishing work with a strong attention to detail. Well-developed personal computer skills (MS Office). Have or be able to obtain CPR, first aid, and AED certification. In-depth knowledge or ability to quickly learn park facilities, company procedures, and departmental procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality with employee information. Physical Requirements Include: Requires frequent standing and walking for the entirety of a shift. Must be able to lift, push or pull bins with weights of 40 pounds on a daily basis. Must be able to stand and bend throughout an 8-hour shift. Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam (provided by Xanterra’s partner clinic). Must have clean driving record (no more than 3 minor violations in the last 3 years and no major violations in the last 5 years) and the ability to pass DOT road test.
