Position Summary
MSU seeks an experienced leader as Assistant Director for the University’s risk management and insurance functions. This position assists in managing the operational and personal activities of the office, developing and implementing policies and procedures to address management of risk for the university, and maintains the property and casualty insurance programs for the university.
The Office of Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) is one of five units within MSU’s Finance organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Assistant Director plans, directs and coordinates the operations of the unit. Responsibilities include:
+ Administration of the property and casualty insurance and self-insurance programs for the University to include purchase of miscellaneous insurance policies, selection of brokers, and third-party administration services. Investigate loss control issues and recommend appropriate measures to reduce the University’s exposure to loss. (25%)
+ Investigate, evaluate, and coordinate defense of claims with the Office of the General Counsel and the University’s casualty insurer. Represent the University in court settlement proceedings. Monitor the relationship and activities of the University’s third-party administrator for commercial general liability and educators’ legal liability claims, including reviewing and evaluating recommendations for disposition of claims. (25%)
+ Advise faculty, staff and students regarding interpretation and application of unique commercial and self-insurance programs. Review indemnification and insurance clauses in contracts and grants. Negotiate on behalf of the University with external agencies for contract terms which are within the risk tolerance of the University. Provide proof of coverage as necessary. (25%)
+ Provide consultative services to the campus community regarding exposures to loss. Monitor regulatory issues related to risk management. Coordinate business continuity and damage assessment function within the University emergency response system. (15%)
+ Assist the Director in the financial management of self-insured funds and claim payment process. Prepare financial reports specific to line of coverage and fiscal year. Respond to auditor inquiries regarding liabilities. Coordinate the design, development and operation of an internal risk management information system used to capture, analyze and report on data relevant to financial management of the insurance and loss control programs. (10%)
This position is "remote-friendly", with the expectation of on-campus presence periodically. This is typically referred to as "Hybrid", with the flexibility of regular remote work mixed with in-office work as mutually agreed upon with the supervisor.
Minimum Requirements
+ Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a baccalaureate degree program in Business or Public Administration.
+ Relevant coursework in risk management and insurance.
+ Five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in risk management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
+ Extensive knowledge of University policies & procedures.
+ Experience supervising, developing and evaluating professional staff.
+ Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
+ Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and/or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) preferred
