RN Charge Nurse - Med-Surg

Salary Range: $47.77 - $65.48
Pay rates are determined based on experience and internal equity.
Position Summary:
This position reports to the department director or the House Supervisor. Supervises/delegates nursing care given by nursing staff, assistive personnel, and students. Supervises staff members during shift and directs unit nursing personnel. Provides input regarding staff performance. Assigns responsibility for completion of specific shift duties to appropriate nursing personnel. Coordinates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges. Re-evaluates patient care as patient/unit conditions change. Assesses options and takes appropriate course of action in over- and under-staffed conditions. Documents all cases of misconduct and intervenes as appropriate. Works with the nursing directors, nursing staff and dietary aides to assure coordinated approaches to quality patient care. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice. Remains flexible to changing systems. Treats patients, families, visitors, peers and physicians with consideration and respect. Communicates concerns appropriately using the established chain of command. Works well under stress or with tight deadlines. Must work well with supervisors, co-workers, patients, family members and visitors.District Responsibility:

Sets patient care priorities. Makes patient assignments according to patient needs, nurse’s skills, and with consideration to the continuity of patient care. Patient assignments are to be documented on the daily Assignment Sheets. Takes patient care assignment as appropriate to allow for completion of charge nurse responsibilities as follows: the charge nurse will take patients with an overall lower acuity in addition to being in charge if there is a call-in or unit census has changed. Night shift charge nurse will take full patient load. Insures patient care coverage is maintained during those times when staff leave the unit for breaks/meals. Adjustments may need to occur depending on unit activity and staffing. Receives report from charge nurse of preceding shift, and gives report to charge nurse of oncoming shift regarding patient conditions and general status of unit. Communicates information affecting patient conditions or unit operations to co-workers as appropriate. Monitors nursing care delivery and assists in maintaining unit standards of nursing practice. Assists nursing staff in making judgments related to patient care or directs to appropriate source. Assumes/assigns responsibility for orientation of nursing staff as designated by the Department Director. Takes appropriate actions regarding unresolved problematic situations which affect the nurse, patient, patient family, or significant others. Coaches unit personnel regarding inappropriate staff behavior during shift and informs Department Director of incident and action taken. Documents all cases of misconduct and informs Director. In situations involving gross misconduct, intervenes with immediate and appropriate action to insure the safety of patients and others. Seeks assistance from Director or Nursing Supervisor for direction regarding disciplinary action. Assists with staff evaluations. Documents tardiness. Assigns admitted or transferred patients to an appropriate bed and staff member. Consults with individuals/departments as appropriate regarding patient admissions, transfers or discharges. Assesses options and takes appropriate course of action in under- and overstaffed conditions, and informs Director/Nursing Supervisor of significant events and needs of staff. Maintains all required licenses and certifications and monitors personal and professional growth development. Position Competencies Other Duties Assigned by SupervisorEssential Functions:

Education: Current California RN. Experience: Minimum 2 years as Med/Surg nurse Cert/License: Current California nursing license, BLS, ACLS certification through American Heart Association and completion of all HealthStream requirements required. PALS certification within 120 days of hire.
