RN - Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

Following surgery, caregivers take patients to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) to monitor their progress in recovering from the immediate effects of surgery and anesthesia. In the PACU, oxygen is routinely used upon arrival, patients are often asked to cough and breathe deeply, patients rate their pain on a scale of 0-10 and pain medication is sometimes given in small doses. 

A caregiver in this position works evenings from 9:00AM - 9:30PM and 11:00AM - 7:30PM, with on-call requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

Provide direct nursing care. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for a given patient population. Complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.  Develop and update goals, involve patients and families in developing plans of care, coordinating the interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.  Provide nursing care, administer treatments and medication, and document.  Participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes Contribute to the improvement of care and participate in the quality improvement process. Delegate tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person/role model/mentor, pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain applicable certification/licensure and obtain any required certifications specific to the unit.  Assess patient status, communicate and document pertinent information regarding patient condition and changes in condition and prioritize patient care needs Perform calmly and professionally during crisis or emergencies, learn new routines quickly and develop, document, and provide comprehensive discharge planning and teaching for patients and families.   

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

Graduate from an accredited school of Professional Nursing  Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)  Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) Successful completion of AGMC and PACU RN orientation programs

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
