Performs patient assessment, IV conscious sedation, patient/family teaching and triage. Provides primary clinical support to the provider and patient to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient's condition. Follows up on diagnostic testing to ensure completion, accuracy, and filing in medical record to ensure continuity and care.
Job Duties Obtains and documents patient medical history, chief complaint, vital signs, and provides basic medical data base for provider, and prepares patient for examinations.Assists provider in performance of GI endoscopic procedures as directed by provider to facilitate accurate diagnosis.Collects and prepares laboratory specimens and completes associated paperwork to expedite laboratory studies with maximum accuracy and efficiency.Assists with orientation of new personnel to ensure that they are appropriately trained to support patients and provider.Executes and documents ongoing patient communication.Provides instruction to ensure patient's understanding of medical condition and compliance with treatment instructions.Inserts, monitors, regulates and discontinues IVs as required by provider.Administers medications.Administers blood products, IV push medications and conscious sedation.Monitors patients having conscious sedation and during recovery.Monitors inventory medical and surgical supplies, pharmaceutical and controlled substances to ensure adequate supply levels, verify expiration dates, document utilization, optimize organizational efficiency and space utilization.Routinely inspects and observes condition and operation of diagnostic equipment and instrumentation to ensure proper operation and identify need for preventive and corrective maintenance.May clean, sterilize and prepare instruments, according to established protocols, to ensure required level of asepsis and adequate availability.Oversees and leads work activities of other Clinic Nurses and Endoscopy Technicians.Inserts and administers intravenous therapy per unit protocol.Administers preoperative, pre-procedure medication as ordered and indicated per unit protocol Instructs patients and significant others during the preoperative, pre-procedural period and offers emotional support.Recognizes early changes in the patient's condition, any unusual events or post-operative complications and initiates appropriate action for the management of those events or complications.Collaborates with anesthesia services in the administration of moderate sedation.Work is typically performed in a clinical environment. Hours: Rotation of start times between 6:30am, 7am and 8am On-call rotation - to be discussed at interviewNo scheduled weekends or holidays - besides on-callUnion: YesThe endoscopy department at Geisinger Wyoming Valley is a fast paced procedure-based unit that performs a variety of endoscopic procedures including esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), bronchoscopy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) on mostly adult patients for a myriad of indications.
The highly skilled endoscopy team is comprised of gastroenterologists and pulmonologists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, endoscopy technicians, unit coordinator, clinical team coordinator, and clinical nurse supervisor. We pride ourselves as a dynamic team that balances the high output needs of outpatient and urgent inpatient cases throughout the day to deliver tertiary level care in a community setting to patients in the region.
