Purpose of the position: To provide all victims of sexual assault and/or domestic violence who present to the Emergency Department or disclose while inpatient a compassionate, trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, evidence-based forensic evaluation.
Requirements for the position:
• One-year prior experience as a registered nurse
• Completion of an accredited course for Forensic Nurse Examiner
• Demonstrated competency in evidence collection and evaluation
• Knowledge of the criminal justice system as it relates to assault/sexual assault
• Minimum of Bachelors’ Degree in nursing preferred
Duties:
• Collection of evidence using a sexual assault evidence collection kit, domestic violence documentation tool and/or nonfatal strangulation tool.
• Further assessment and documentation for drug-facilitated sexual assault
• Assessment and documentation of injury and nonfatal strangulation assessment
• Risk evaluation and prophylactic care relating to potential sexually- transmitted diseases
• Evaluation of pregnancy risk
• Evaluation of need for PEP Protocol
• Crisis intervention and collaboration with appropriate advocacy agency
• Referrals for medical and psychological follow-up
• Safety planning with patient prior to discharge
• Maintain secure chain-of-custody of collected evidence
Additional responsibilities:
• Commit to 2 years with the Serenity Program and must perform a minimum of four examinations per year or complete skills assessment
• Involvement in at least one community service project relating to domestic violence, date rape, sexual assault, or human trafficking
• Obtain at least four Continuing Education Credit (CEU) relating to assault/sexual assault, domestic violence, date rape, human trafficking, nonfatal strangulation, or stalking
• Attend meetings regularly scheduled within the department
• Perform annual evaluation and skills assessment
