JOB TITLE: Nursing Supervisor

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

     Responsible for the supervision, coordination and management of the nursing care provided in all nursing units of Ira Davenport and the Taylor Health

     Center during the shift.  This includes: oversight of staffing, equipment/supply, and patient/resident needs, provision of assistance and support to managers/charge nurses by

     assisting them with identification of needs, problem solving, and clarification/communication of policies and procedures, monitoring for regulatory compliance and facilitating

     interdepartmental communication to meet resident's/patient's needs. Participates in the quality assurance and CQI process.

 REPORTS TO: Acute Care Nurse Manager

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

**   1.   Monitors for correct, consistent application of nursing care standards and policies and procedures and addresses variances appropriately.

**   2.   Monitors for correct, consistent application of infection control policies and addresses variances appropriately.

**   3.   Serves as a clinical resource person by accessing needs and provides appropriate support personnel.

**   4.   Assists nurse managers/resident care coordinators in investigating and counseling for medication errors.  Follows up on incident reports/event

          screens per policy.

**   5.   Receives or delivers reports from/to each unit and demonstrates skill in problem resolution.

**   6.   Evaluates and makes recommendations to employees regarding injuries or illness to Emergency Department or Employee Health (PCC).  Assures

          incident reports are completed.

**   7.   Facilitates professional growth and development of nursing staff through identification of learning needs and encouraging participation in formal

          and informal education.

**   8.   Evaluates and documents staffing levels on each unit based upon census, acuity and special needs prior to each shift.

**   9.   Makes rounds to all units to assess workload and staffing issues.

**   10.  Informs Nurse Managers or Senior Manager promptly of variances in practices and regulatory compliance.

**   11.  Communicates organizational changes in a positive, supportive, and open manner.

**   12.  Utilizes proper chain of command.

**   13.  Utilizes and promotes customer service standards.

**   14.  Demonstrates knowledge of and participates in all codes, drills and emergency situations.

**   15.  Acts as administrative designee in the absence of the Directors of Nursing.

     16.  Serves on nursing and organizational committees as assigned. 

     17.  Assumes responsibility for own personal and professional growth.

     18.  Represents hospital at meetings deemed necessary by administrator. Attends Department Head meetings on a regular basis.

     19.  Assures that each supervised individual understands and accepts their personal responsibility for safety.

     20.  Completes all aspects of the assigned safety inspections in the designated timeframe.

     21.  Demonstrates safety in own work habits and personal conduct.

     22.  Investigates and analyzes every accident.

     23.  Communicates to employees the importance of immediate reporting of all injuries, regardless of  severity.

     24.  Has working knowledge of Corporate Compliance regulations and promptly reports any potential Corporate Compliance violations to the Corporate

          Compliance Officer.

     25.  Is familiar with and demonstrates Continuous Quality Improvement principles and participates in the process as appropriate, focusing on meeting the customer service needs

          of the internal and external customers.

     26.  Must possess the highest ethical standards with respect to discretion and regard for confidential information.

     27.  Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

     28.  In order to provide the highest quality care to our patients and residents, individuals may be required to work hours beyond those normally scheduled.  Work schedules may

          be subject to change based on the needs of the department.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

 

     Current license in NYS as a Registered Professional Nurse required with BSN preferred.  Current BLS certification.  PALS and ACLS Certification within one year of hire/transfer

     date.  JET Management Level I certification within 5 years of hire date.  Pursuit of JET Management Level II certification strongly encouraged. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

EXPERIENCE:

 

     Minimum of one year acute care nursing experience and a minimum of one year management/charge or supervisory experience required.

 

 

 PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:

 

 

     Intermittent sitting and standing, walking and occasional moving and lifting required.  Frequent and complex mental demands for decision making and problem solving.  Must be

     sale to function appropriately and maintain composure and
