Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Radiation Therapy Manager and general supervision of the Oncology Service Line Director and according to established policies and procedures.  Provides professional nursing care to those patients being evaluated, treated and followed by the Department of Radiation Therapy. Coordinates total nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching, acts as a patient/family advocate, and works with other nursing and ancillary personnel as required.  Work is very confidential.  Performs other duties of the department as required.

Essential Functions
1. Review and prepare charts for patient visits.
2. Obtain and monitor vital signs.
3. Reviews present healthcare practices, identifies current health problems, and documents findings in the patient record for physician review.
4. Addresses the need for nursing intervention at the time of visit and identifies the type of intervention necessary.
5. Evaluate patients' healthcare strengths and utilize these to overcome identified limitations.
6. Reinforce teaching provided by physicians concerning illness/injury, the healing process, and the recognition of complications. Reinforces patient understanding of information in order to achieve patient participation in compliance with treatment plan.
7. Identifies problems interfering with compliance to prescribed medical regimens and adjusts the nursing plan accordingly.
8. Administers medications per MD order-IV, IM, subcutaneous, PO, etc., under the general supervision of the physician or RN.
9. Reinforces teaching done by providers to patients and families about specific drugs and their side effects.
10. Inserts IV catheters and administers IV drugs.
11. Monitors patients for adverse side effects of IV or IM drugs and responds quickly and appropriately, upon physician direction, if adverse reaction occurs.
12. Set up and assist in performing sterile procedures. Catheterize patients when ordered by a physician.
13. Set up equipment and position patients for examinations.
14. Provides emotional support to patients undergoing specific procedures/examinations.
15. Reinforces teaching, provided by physicians, to patients/family members regarding dressing techniques, and evaluates patients for understanding.
16. Draw blood samples and obtain specimens for cultures, urinalysis and/or wound analysis.
17. Under general supervision of the physician or RN, monitors patient's response to invasive procedures performed in the clinic area and notifies physician of reactions.
18. Recognizes and responds quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.
19. Under general supervision of the physician, analyzes and identifies the need for ongoing nursing care and initiates public health referrals or other support service referrals.
20. Participates in department Clinical Quality Measures and other defined quality processes and procedures in the department.
21. Participates in weekly chart rounds and another departmental meetings as necessary.
22. Maintain all logs including Refrigerator, Freezer, Blanket Warmer, Eye Wash Station, and Medication logs.
23. Obtains authorizations for diagnostic tests and or studies ordered by the physician.
24. Assist with diagnosis codes under the general supervision of the physician.
25. Under general supervision of the physician or RN, assist with emergency cases after hours or on weekends as the need arises. Re-inforce patients and/or families with instruction and education relevant to the condition.
26. Accurately documents nursing observations, medications, treatments, and other care given.
27. Serves as a backup support for the Oncology Nurse Navigator
28. Performs miscellaneous duties as needed.
