A valid Louisiana Class “A” Commercial License and Herbicide Equipment Applicator License is required. Examples of work: Herbicide Application 65% + Operates spray truck or other spray equipment (may have GPS navigation system) to maintain roadside vegetation along state highways, around bridge railings, abutments, highway signs, traffic control devices, drainage structures, and drainage channels by application of appropriate herbicides. + Responsible for measuring/mixing proper amounts of appropriate herbicides as needed. + Operates spray trucks with 1000 and 2500 gallon tanks mounted on truck in addition to pump and motor injection system with power multi-boom sprayer. + Operates trailer mounted sprayers attached to equipment (e.g. tractors, all-terrain vehicles) for areas not accessible with herbicide spray truck. May be required to operate a smaller sprayer, mounted on back of a 1-ton truck. + Uses backpack sprayer and/or hand held sprayer to make herbicide applications. + Loads supplies onto spray trucks. + Handles chemicals including, but not limited to: Roundup Pro Concentrate, Outrider, 2-4D, Arsenal, Surfactants. + Maintains current copies off all Material Safety Data Sheets in herbicide truck at all times. + Makes minor repairs to equipment and performs routine maintenance necessary to keep equipment clean and in good working order. + Maintains an accurate, legible, and precise daily record of all herbicides being applied as required by DOTD and the Department of Agriculture and Forestry. + Ensure proper calibration of herbicide spray rigs and equipment. + Maintains a spill response kit on herbicide truck and reports all spills to appropriate department in a timely manner. Miscellaneous Duties 15% + During adverse weather conditions and times herbicides are not being applied, or as instructed by supervisor, the Roadside Development Herbicide Applicator shall perform other duties and operate equipment comparable to requirements of Mobile Equipment Operator I (MEO I), Mobile Equipment Operator II (MEO II), Mobile Equipment Operator Heavy 1. + Operate power and hand tools in the removal of trees, tree branches, and other vegetation that may be encroaching onto state right-of-ways or which may create sight obstructions for motorists. + Remove liter and debris from state maintained highways and interstate systems. + Unload and load material or equipment. + Job duties listed for Mobile Equipment Operator I (MEO I), Mobile Equipment Operator II (MEO II), Mobile Equipment Operator Heavy 1. Functional Supervision and Training 15% + Exercises functional supervision over support vehicle driver and/or Mobile Equipment Operators assisting on a project basis. + Assists with directional arrow on spray rigs in emergency situations. Applies Ethylene Glycol to bridge decks and other approximate structures during freezing weather. + Mandatory attendance will be required for all meetings and training courses relative to the application of herbicides and/or other chemical treatments as deemed appropriate by supervisor. + Participates in DOTD Structured Training Program to enhance performance and to be prepared for promotional opportunities. Job Concepts FUNCTION OF WORK: To operate Herbicide spray equipment to accomplish an efficient and practical application of herbicides. To operate mobile equipment (such as that enumerated below) to accomplish transportation, maintenance, or construction tasks. LEVEL OF WORK: Advanced. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Direct supervision from Roadside Development District Coordinator during spraying season and from a foreman or other higher-level maintenance, supervisory or administrative personnel. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Functional supervision over mobile equipment operators connected with the herbicide equipment. LOCATION OF WORK: Department of Transportation and Development. Other locations may be approved by SCS. JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from mobile equipment operators by the complexity of the herbicide equipment and the responsibility for applying herbicides in accordance with state and federal policies and regulations. Note: Operation of spray truck or other spray equipment using protective clothing, boots, gloves and/or respirators when necessary will be the primary and recurring functions of the job. Attends meetings and training courses relative to herbicide application as directed by the Department. Maintain highway roadside and vegetation by proper application of herbicides and/or other chemical treatments. Maintain vegetation at bridge railing, abutments, highway signs, traffic control devices, drainage structures, and drainage channels by application of appropriate herbicides. Ensures proper herbicides are utilized for each vegetative maintenance area and procedure in accordance with requirements of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and chemical label. Ensure proper weather conditions, wind conditions, and topographical conditions are tolerable for spraying of selected herbicides. Operate the required spray equipment and truck to ensure the proper rate of herbicide is being applied in accordance with the label and other special factors. May testify in regard to lawsuits arising from complaints as to herbicide application. May be required to perform duties and operate equipment listed for mobile equipment operators.
