Robert Tipton Jr. Hazing Prevention & APPLE Athletics Coordinator
The University of Virginia’s (UVA) Division of Student Affairs invites applications for an exciting opportunity in the Department of Student Health and Wellness’ Gordie Center: The Robert Tipton Jr. Hazing Prevention & APPLE Athletics Coordinator. The University’s mission to develop engaged citizen-leaders is the foundation of the Division’s work, which is guided by six core values – academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service, and student self-governance. This is a full-time, twelve-month, University Managerial and Professional Staff position with benefits, partially funded through an endowment and through a two-year grant from the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division II.

Job Duties

Develop and facilitate evidence-informed hazing and substance misuse prevention trainings, materials, and website content for college and high school audiences nationally and at UVA.With excellent customer service, provide coaching on evidence-informed substance misuse and hazing prevention strategies for high school and college audiences, including athletics.In collaboration with the Gordie Center Director, plan, administer, and evaluate the NCAA Division II APPLE Training Institute for student-athlete substance misuse prevention.Within the system of student self-governance, provide advice and support to student organizations focused on hazing prevention and on substance misuse prevention within athletics.Design program evaluation, collect and analyze data, and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $50,000 - $60,000 and is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. Employee's benefits package highlights include:

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree or equivalent in Counseling, Health Promotion, Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, or other related field preferred.Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience. Experience as an undergraduate or graduate student will be considered.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills, including proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, determine priorities, and meet deadlines.Understanding of student development, identity development, intersections, and complexity of social identities.Knowledge of behavior change theories.Experience developing and delivering evidence-informed substance misuse and hazing prevention strategies.Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to develop mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external partners.Personal characteristics including innovation, creativity, the ability to work with diverse groups of people, being a self-starter who can thrive in an environment that is developing, growing, and changing and a passion for excellence.Strong oral, digital, and written communication skills, including confident public speaking and group facilitation skills.Must be flexible and willing to work occasional weekends and evenings as necessary and recognize the need to do so independently. Travel to the APPLE Training Institute is required, which will be held in Denver, CO in September 2025.Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making.Working and operational knowledge of MS Office, Google suite, Canva, Presence, Qualtrics, and social media analytics.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
