Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Rodent Veterinary Technician to manage rodent breeding colonies and provide technical support for research experiments. This role involves animal handling, performing surgeries, and working closely with investigators and veterinarians to ensure the success of various research projects.
ResponsibilitiesManage rodent breeding colonies, including identifying animals (ear tagging, ear notching), setting up breeding cages, weaning animals, and collecting and submitting samples for genotyping.Record pedigree, births, deaths, and other data electronically.Perform cross-foster rederivation.Provide technical services for research experiments, including blood collection, injections, oral gavage, euthanasia, tissue harvest, and rodent survival surgical procedures.Perform additional animal procedures for investigators and veterinarians, including working with infectious agents like SARS-CoV-2.Act as a liaison between researchers and RAR.Complete administrative tasks, such as recordkeeping on various platforms, maintaining detailed time and procedure records for billing, and providing weekly colony reports to investigators and veterinarians.Order animals and supplies and maintain equipment.Inventory samples, inoculum, and equipment and supplies.Coordinate with husbandry personnel to provide animal care.Assist in training researchers and maintaining equipment, including isoflurane gas machines.Follow and help implement safety protocols, SOPs, guidelines, and other related documents.Maintain strict infection control procedures.Perform other tasks as assigned by the veterinarian.Essential SkillsExperience with animal handling, veterinary practices, and animal research.Proficiency in anesthesia, animal surgery, and animal husbandry.Knowledge of animal science, biology, and veterinary hospital practices.Ability to follow safety protocols and maintain infection control procedures.Additional Skills & QualificationsBachelor's Degree in a related field is preferred but not mandatory.Experience in a veterinary or research setting is preferred.Work Environment
The Rodent Veterinary Technician will work in both the Operating Room (OR) and Animal Research Lab environments. The role provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience with high-volume animal care and contribute to cutting-edge research funded by the NIH.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00
