Rolling Stone: Director of Photography

Rolling Stone, the pop culture bible for more than 50 years, is looking for a new Director of Photography to oversee its original imagery across all platforms.  

Rolling Stone has a history of truly iconic photography. As the Director of Photography, you’ll have a chance to craft the next phase of that remarkable tradition. The ideal candidate must have the sharpest of eyes, a finger on the pulse of pop culture, a diplomat’s touch, and a mind that’s both hyper-creative and hyper-organized. That’s because you and your team will oversee all original photography in print, on our site, and across our many social channels. In association with the creative director, the editorial leadership, and the photographers, you will help develop concepts for photo shoots with the world’s most recognizable names, and work with stylists to make sure those stars are dressed impeccably. You will propose the photographers who’ll capture those seminal images, and make sure the whole thing goes off with a minimum of drama.

Responsibilities: 

Oversee and monitor all original photography across Rolling Stone’s many platforms — from cover shoots to online galleries to Instagram posts Along with the creative director, maintain the aesthetic goals for Rolling Stone photography, and make sure all of our shoots adhere to those visual aims Collaborate closely with our art, video, social, and Twitch to assemble a truly cohesive approach to visual storytelling Manage the team that supplies all imagery for news stories Work with the creative director and the photographers, in association with the top editors, to craft and execute concepts for Rolling Stone’s highest-profile photo shoots Brainstorm ideas for big stories, photo essays, and major features with Rolling Stone’s creative and editorial leadership Help build out a rigorously selected stable of photographers at all levels to maintain the quality of visual imagery in the magazine. Provide direction to those photographers in the lead-up to shoots and while on-set  Work closely with talent and their representatives throughout the process    

Requirements: 

Minimum of 7+ years of editorial photography commissioning A sharp eye, a felt sense of what’s next in pop culture, and an understanding at an instinctual level of what makes an image work for Rolling Stone Proven expertise in executing high-profile shoots with top talent Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, lead teams, and meet deadlines Deep understanding of pressing topics for diverse cultures and communities Knowledge of photo research, syndication, and contract negotiation with photographers and their agents A strong network of industry connections including photographers, agents, stylists, hair & makeup artists, locations, and prop houses The ability to juggle several projects at the same time and keep a cool head under pressure A commitment to being a team player, and collaborating with colleagues across departments.

Typical wage range: $170k - $200k. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role. The typical candidate is hired below midpoint of the range. The total compensation package for this position will also include other elements, a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits including 401(k) eligibility and paid time off benefits.
