Who We Are:
The Internal Services Department (ISD) plays a major role in supporting all County of Los Angeles departments and commissions. With an annual budget of over $885 million and 2,162 budgeted positions along with over 5,120 contracted workers of varying professions in facilities management, information technology, environmental, administrative, purchasing and contracting. ISD's commitment is to provide Speed, Reliability, and Value.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Safety Officer and are responsible for the performance of delegated safety program functions. Work assignments may include work site or field safety inspections, conducting training in respiratory protection, hearing conservation, confined space procedures, Hazard Communications, CPR/First Aid, and other training as required. Incumbents must have well developed written and oral communication skills and knowledge of California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Air Quality Management District (AQMD) Regulations. These positions must also have the ability to observe, analyze and make recommendations for the correction of safety hazards.
Essential Job Functions
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Ensures that the Department's safety program is in compliance with Federal, State, and local rules, regulations, procedures, and Departmental Safety Directives.
Conducts regulatory and agency research in order to assist in the development of departmental safety directives, standards, and instructions.
Assists field supervisors in developing workplace safety procedures and makes recommendations for the correction of unsafe conditions and practices.
Conducts field inspections to ensure that workplace safety practices are in place, to monitor the condition of equipment, and to assist in training staff on the correct usage of commonly used personal protective equipment.
Investigates and prepares reports on industrial and automotive accidents and makes recommendations for their prevention.
Assists in conducting industrial, automotive, and other safety training programs necessary to protect employee health and safety.
Assists in the planning and implementation of the Department's Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP).
Evaluates and/or monitors the ability of employees to operate motor vehicles safely.
In the absence of the Safety Officer, represents the Department at meetings conducted by the County and other agencies including California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) hearings.
Assists in conducting training sessions in Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Asbestos, Confined Space, Hazard Communication, ergonomics, lead, indoor air quality, and other Departmental Safety Training Programs as needed.
Under the direction of a Safety Officer, conducts work site and field monitoring inspections using air, sound, and other monitoring devices as needed.
Assists in maintaining and verifying statistical records, writing reports utilizing spreadsheet and database software and preparing correspondence.
Drives a vehicle to and from work sites, meetings, and training locations.
Requirements
REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
Graduation with a Bachelor's degree* from an accredited college with a specialization in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Physics, Biology, Chemistry or a closely related field. One year of responsible safety program experience** will be accepted for each year of college training up to a maximum of two years of the required education.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out job-related essential functions.
Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
PHYSICAL EXPECTATION:
3 - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Our Assessment Process: First, meet our requirements above. This part of the assessment is worth 100% of your total score and assesses: professional/technical knowledge and experience in safety.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment to be added onto the list of eligible candidates.
