Summary:
The Health and Safety Representative provides technical and functional support to operations management to ensure safe, compliant and environmentally sound operations. This individual collaborates with multiple stakeholders in determining and adhering to industry best practices while achieving compliance with corporate Cooke Aquaculture Inc. and applicable regulatory standards.
The H&S manager must be proficient in the required technical skills, possess strong communication skills, both oral and written, and illustrate confidence when interacting with key contacts.
Expectations also include providing employee training in the appropriate health and safety practices and compliance requirements of the Aquaculture Industry, including site specific orientation, and assist in ongoing employee training and mentoring.
This role will lead investigations and root cause analyses of serious incidents/near miss events and recommend corrective actions to address these issues.
The role will assist/support with employee injury and illness claims
Key Function(s):
Overall responsibility supporting integration of policies/procedures to improve overall Health, Safety and Environmental compliance of the Maine farming, processing, and service operations. Tasks include but are not limited to:
+ Execute health and safety initiatives in the workplace according to legal and regulatory guidelines/standards.
+ Complete safety performance management reports, key performance indicators (E.g.: TIR – total incident rate) as required.
+ Assist in implementing policies, procedures, and work practices to maintain a culture of health and safety
+ Evaluate practices, procedures, equipment, and facilities to assess risk and adherence to established requirements.
+ Conduct training and presentations on health and safety matters and incident prevention
+ Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
+ Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics
+ Establish processes to help ensure compliance with applicable Occupational Health & Safety Acts, Regulations, and Codes.
+ Conduct or schedule H&S related training, inspections and audits as required; conduct and assist in maintaining training records.
+ Coach and assist managers with conducting Hazard Assessments
+ Assist with reports, investigations, and document H&S incidents, near misses and hazard ID’s as required.
+ Ensure timely safety data entry and accident / incident reporting to ensure accurate reporting and timely corrective actions are implemented.
+ Assist Human Resources with injured workers’ ESRTW plans.
+ Participate and/or support in various safety committees to ensure effectiveness and advise members on matter relating to Health and Safety.
+ Assist employees in understanding and applying for potential benefits resulting from work related injuries and illnesses.
Working Conditions:
+ External outside marine environment
+ Hatchery, manufacturing facility shop floor, and office environment
+ Willingness to travel (possesses formal documentation, passport etc.)
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience
+ Ability to analyze problems and make appropriate recommendations
+ Ability to work in a matrix organization supporting multiple organizations
+ Knowledge of State Occupational Health & Safety Acts and Regulations (OHSA)
+ Knowledge of Maine Labor Codes
+ Basic knowledge of US Coast Guard requirements
+ Root Cause Analysis training
+ Skill in accident / incident injury analysis
+ Skill in oral presentations and training
+ Skills in handling and resolving conflict
+ First Aid certification
+ Willingness to participate in on-going continuing education as required by the organization
+ Travel possible
